GPS & Maps

I know its yet another question on GPS & maps but I've done a few searches, it has both totally confused me & given me a headache!

I'm looking for a relatively cheap route to display OS topo maps off road (I have on road nav through a Garmin iQue 3600 palm PDA with City Navigator software). Unfortunately Garmin have chosen not to make the TOPO Great Britain software compatable with my machine. I have a early version of Memory Map and am trying to find a good low cost PDA to use with that software. The Mio P350 with upgrading my MM software to V5 seems possible at about £300 for the PDA & upgrade.

Has anyone any other suggestions for a PDA with Memory Map Software, or any other software such as Fugawi. Price is an issue as this is purely for off the tarmac so essentially a toy.

Does the Palm PDA use memory cards? If so keep that, buy another memory card and either update MM or get the Fugawi UK OS maps, Downloaded it to Ken's PDA (Windows CE OS) and it seems to work OK, the Fugawi also has a Palm option, can't comment on MM as I don't have it Wink

That seems a good option, will try the Fugawi trial software once my PC is up & running again. I hadn't noticed that Fugawi works with Palm systems. Saves me buying a 2nd PDA just for topo map viewing.

Cheers

Hello,

As I said in another post, you can probably go the road of TTQV : http://www.ttqv.com/main.php?sprache=2 (On the PC...) and PathAway http://www.pathaway.com/PWPalmOS.htm (On the Palm...). If I remember correctly, they are compatible with OS Topo Maps.

They work on the Palm just fine and I get TTQV to run on my Mac under Parallels without any problems !

This is a great setup and frankly, the ability to be able to create Garmin maps and use the one that you can find on the net like this one : http://www.ourfootprints.de/gps/mapsource-island_e.html is a HUGE bonus to me ! Right now I am fiddling with old soviet topo maps and this is impressive (At least to me...) Wink

I still not fully convinced and trying out the programs (They have long trial versions...)but they sound definitely good ! Wink

Let us know what you find...

Gurvan, Sorry I missed these sites, will look harder next time!

My PC at home is fryed, unfortunately so is out broadband connection so I'll leave trying this until I get them up & running. I'll try with the demo version to copy the UK "Memory Map" maps onto the Garmin iQue, if that works problem solved!

Thanks

Derek

DSL, let me know if you get anywhere with converting the "memory map" maps to garmin (possibly mapsource) format.

DSL : No problem... One cannot know everything me included ! I may miss some feature by not looking to precisely at what Fugawi or OZI Explorer provide.

But to answer your question and complete your information, just have a look there : http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic5781.html

and there : http://www.ttqv.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=59117#59117

On that last one, note how fast and how precise the answers were... Also, please don't comment on how foolish I can be ! Embarassed Very Happy Embarassed Laughing Embarassed

But hey, this is also how you learn ! Wink

Simkna : As for converting "Memory Maps" to Garmin format, again, look into the TTQV manual for that required information... You can find it here : http://www.ttqv.com/main.php?content=21&download=13 Look around page 126 to see if this is what you want... Wink

I can see how I could export from TTQV in garmin format, but can't get my memory map navigator (OS landranger maps - qct and qed files) into TTQV.

Ok... I see... TTQV does not seem to know those formats... Can you export those maps to an JPG format from that "Memory Map" software ?

It might be that those format are to proprietary...

Also, you could try asking for help in the TTQV forum which seems as active as our ! Very Happy
