When things go wrong it is always best to get the codes read as this will give a pretty clear indication of what is wrong and reduces alot of guess work Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

Yes, that is the first thing on the shopping list, or was until this warning light popped on.
I have a colleague that has one to check the code until I get me own.
Provided the temp doesn’t go wild and the coolant isn’t under the levels it should be safe to drive, right?

It's a D4 - nothing is easy
Hopefully it is something simple and cheap(ish) to fix Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

Are you sure you're actually low on coolant? The sensor is a very common fault caused by the float deteriorating, requiring a bottle replacement. It's tricky but DIY-able. I did mine on the drive.
Are you seeing actual loss in level and is it dripping out?D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

Yesterday after the first drive I was banking on it being the sensor/tank issue, as the tank seemed to have fluid. Drove to work this morning and it had the error the entire way. Checked levels after it cooled, it was empty. Topped it up, ran it. Empty again. Telltale pool underneath.
Long story and 5l of antifreeze later, my buddy (ex military aircraft mechanic) assisted with pressure testing the system. Finally found one hose whose clamp wasn’t tightened, and it was just out
Eventually righted it and no leak, no error.
What a ride.

Spinning it positively you should now have the one part (bottle), which tends to be the root cause most times, as a spare

No doubt,
I have taken it all as a positive TBH. I have learned so much researching and finding the fault, troubleshooting in an organized manner etc. If it had resulted in days of no car or thousands of cash, I may have felt differently.
But this morning I drove to work with zero warning lights, and all it took was a bit of my time.
Overall it was the finest drive of my life.
