I was a half mile from home when the battery warning light came on.
I returned home, parked the car, and noticed smoke emanating from the front offside area of the engine bay and quickly disconnected the battery. I assume the alternator is goosed.
When ordering a new alternator I was advised that it is likely that it has taken out the battery as well.
I put a meter on the disconnected battery and obtained a reading of 12.67v which seems reasonable to me.
Could someone advise me how to properly check the EXIDE battery, which is 2 years old and has not given any signs of distress.
When driving the car, before I got a half mile from home, I noticed that the suspension had dropped to access height and it was taking longer than normal to achieve Normal ride height. Is there a connection with the failure of the alternator.

You more than likely saved the battery with your quick actions. Advisable to order a OEM Denso alternator as some have had trouble with cheaper alternatives.
When you fit new alternator, the warning light doesn't always extinguish straight away on first start up so don't panic.
As for the suspension fault, it is probably related but you'll soon find out. Stu

Currently running on alternator no.3. The factory new unit failed after 4 years and LR supplied a replacement overhauled unit FOC as a goodwill gesture; so it lasted 9 years and approx 85,000 miles. I've now got a new Denso alternator and hope to never see a requirement to replace it again.....Ive never owned a car that has used 3 alternators in 14 years... You've probably never owned a car with the power requirements of a D3 either.
I've fitted one alternator in over 150,000 miles. And that was in the first 50,000 of that, and that alternator looked original.
