Goodbye D3, Hello D4

I have wanted to trade up to a D4 for some time. I acquired my Silver 2007 D3 SE TDV6 in 2015 with 132000 miles and ran it for 3 and a half years. It never let me down on a run, and apart from the usual servicing bits, and tyres and brakes etc, I fitted a new EPB module, a brand new turbo, a good used crossover pipe, an alternator and 3 x brake calipers. I remapped it as soon as I got it, to produce around 222 bhp and more torque.

I parted company with it 9 days ago, only because I'd found a D4 at, for me, the right price, so I came home having viewed the D4 agreed to buy it and set about selling my D3 (I called my wife before I returned home and asked her to get the D3 fully valeted, as I needed to get it advertised that evening and take pictures etc before we lost the light). Nice guy called Pete, bought it, a former Master Tech with Land Rover. It had 169,000 miles on it at the time it changed hands.

My new steed, is a 2011 Stornoway Grey, 3.0l SDV6, XS, 6 Speed with DPF. with 124,000 miles at the time of purchase some 2 weeks ago. Belts were changed at 120,000. This was already remapped when I bought it. I'm also acquiring a few extra bits and pieces for it as some may have noticed on the For Sale/Wanted threads. It also came with nearly new Michelin Alpin tyres on Range Rover 20" rims.

It sprang a diesel leak in the engine bay after 100 miles of my ownership - it turned out to be an inexpensive repair by my local garage, it was the high pressure fuel hose into the injector pump. They also gave it a full diagnostic health check and its a good 'un. The D4 feels so much better screwed together than the D3. I thought the D3 was brilliant, but having upgraded to the D4, it just feels tauter (and obviously much more powerful).

I offset my contribution to global warming by running a Nissan Leaf EV as my second car...

Cheers,

Neil

I still think my late reg. 2010 D4 was the best put together of all the Disco's that I've owned. Thumbs Up

Nothing ever rattled or squeaked, it all worked faultlessly and as a whole it just gave me the impression that it was really well put together.

It felt better to drive than my D3, but the D4 interior is less practical imo.

Don't get me wrong, the D3 is and was a great car. When I upgraded to the D3 from having previously had 200tdi, it was a huge leap in standards of ability and comfort etc. I had a gap between the 200tdi and the D3 it wasn't a consecutive upgrade. I also had my father's Freelander 1 for about 18 months. Then 3 x injectors decided to cause problems, so that's when I got the D3. Anyway, positive differences in favour of the D4 imho:

Tauter
Feels better screwed together.
More powerful
Better phone integration
Better satnav
Better dashboard and instruments
Better rear light styling (ie leds)
Better front light styling
Better styling in general
Far far better to drive at low speeds and when exiting junctions and entering roundabouts... The D3 always thought about it before lunging forward.. Many have commented on this. The D4 just 'goes' when you press the pedal. My wife even commented on this... and is a significant point on better drivability with the D4.
I believe more options and upgrades are possible with the D4 which weren't available on the D3 (eg auto main beam dip).
Any accessories one has for the D3 fit into the D4 (eg boot mats, etc)

fully agree with your opinion
having two slipping disks I used to fall out of D3 after long drive not able to walk properly for a few hours but D4 is way more comfy and having auto box aslo helps to rest legs when in cruise

bus is also still easy to modify to suit owners needs

Thanks All

...the seller actually described the colour as brown, it did look a litte brown in some of his original pictures but I was pleased to see it was grey in the flesh when I viewed it and made the decison to purchase.
