Good servicing deal at Halfords

I know, I know, I should be servicing myself, and I do for most items, however.........

bought some small things in in Halfords over the weekend (about £20) and didn’t think anything else.
Had an email through today saying my purchase had qualified me for a free mot, so, I thought, might as well take a look, you have to book by the end of April but MOT can be up till November, mines due in July so tootled in to book for end of June. Browsed the servicing and the currently have a deal on servicing, including major service down from £314 to £275, and then another 20% off, and then free mot when taken with the service, that’s good I thought, Dennis could do with a full service and the gearbox, diff and engine oils would cost me that, so I went ahead and booked it.
At checkout it asked for any voucher codes, the deal was free mot with the service, but I also had the emailed voucher for free mot so being cheeky, gave it a go....and it took another £39 off the bill Very Happy

So basically, I’ve just booked a £315 major service and a £40 mot for only £188! The £167 saving can go towards the defects they find on the MOT Embarassed

In the words of my darling wife “look honey, I just went to buy a £40 mot, but by spending £188 I saved £167, what a bargain! Rolling with laughter

I wouldn't let Halfords change a bulb, never mind carry out a major service Laughing

Never going to defend them, but my local branch is alright, diagnosed and fixed my alternator issue last year after a week at the local stealers couldn’t. One of the mechanics there also owns a D3, and does a lot of work on them so there’s at least one guy there who knows a D3 from a transit van Smile

I would get them to confirm Exactly what they plan on doing to the gearbox as well Shocked Shocked

is it a top up and not an oil change (then as above would they even know How to do that Question )

If you get it all done for that price mind, well done Bow down

Agree, I saw the Halfords MOT for free thing and thought I may give it a punt.

Wouldn't let them do anything else, certainly not touch my diffs or gearbox!

Best of luck tho, certainly some man maths there Whistle Laughing

River, it’s a levels check and top up. Will do a complete replace at some point when I swap over to the metal sump.

What's the betting that the 'free' MOT results in a long list of jobs which absolutely have to be done to the car?

Its like playing Russian roulette with only one bullet missing, someone will get a good job done but are you going to take a chance.

I had that a while back when i brought my TD5... took it to a LR Indie near me for first MOT (thinking i'll get an honest report) ... about £1800 worth of jobs which without wouldn't pass its MOT, according to them.
Took it to another Indie and it passed with a couple of advisories!! Did the advisories but The large majority of original failure points never did need doing in the 8 years i owned it.
Won't name them but they were clearly trying their luck, will never go back and feel sorry for those that trust them!

My local Halfords has fitted a lot of electrical items to several cars and have done a really good job. In fact my camper van is in next week with them.

At the end of the day it’s down to the people and their skills / knowledge. Thumbs Up

I always take my cars for MOT to our local KF, the Swinton branch, never had a problem and no job building by them, at the moment I’m rebuilding another mini and took it on Friday for MOT, they found the emissions were out, I did some work on the car the same day and took it back, they run it through the emissions tester and was still high, again took out away renewed a couple of things and took it back a couple of days later, they did another test although was still not reaching the standard they haven’t charged me for the re- checks and the MOT only cost £19.71

The reason for the failure was the engine was badly coked up and oil bypassing stem seals and 1 piston, engine currently in bits, new rings installed on all four cylinders, de-coked awaiting head to come back from engine shop, should get it back today and I’ll rebuild it this weekend,
If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works
