Had an interesting discussion with an independent Tyre Power dealer today re availability of tyres for the Disco. I’d originally gone in to get a change over price on the Mickey Thompson ATZ 275x65x18’s, but on further conversation discovered that Cooper ATR’s are also available in that size (along with Cooper ST’s – but they’re a bit more aggressive than I think I want). Now I also have received an email from BF Goodrich to say that the BFG AT KO’s in 265x65x18 are available in Australia. The Coopers and MT ATZ’s have a diameter of 815mm and the BFG’s are 805mm – so they all give a useful increase in clearance over and above the standard Wrangler’s 263mm.
Given I've had a great run out of BFG's before, I'll prabably go down that route. Don't know how far they've been distributed yet, as the email came direct from BFG Head Office - so tyre dealers probably don't know yet.
Interestingly the change over price from the tyre dealer to xge a brand new set of standard Wranglers with the mickey Thompson's was exactly on big fat ZERO (indeed he originally jokingly said he'd have to give me money back).
Cause for celebration I thought - we now have choice.

A friend at work has a new Bitsamissing "Exceed" - which come standard with 265/60R18 tyres. The size you mention Tony - would be aimed at this. Plus there are some more Nippon 4x4s coming with 18" wheels later in the year. Things can only get better... surely! (Fingers crossed!)

Given the track record of BFG ATs in this country, I would've gone for those in a 31.5" tyre on the 18" rims if they'd been available instead of the Mickey T's - large enough, but giving a little more room...

Yep - understand all that Wopac5. The big advantages of going to the larger sizes are
1, The 65 profile allows for a better 'footprint' when aired down for sand
2. There is a gain of nearly 20mm in height at standard ride height. This is a big advantage for high crown dirt tracks where one can travel at 60-80Kph and hence only have standard ride height available.
Good and useful calculator - obviously one needs to be aware of the speedo error.

Martin, also be aware that in most states of Australia a variance in rolling diameter of more than 15mm is illegal. Have a nice day!

then you have to convince your insurance company  06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

WA police are about to start cracking down on illegal lifts etc, so tyres maybe looked at.
An engineering cert here costs over $3000; and there's no guarantee they'll pass it.
I'm happy enough. I've scraped the belly lots and no harms been done. If I have to drive below 50kph, I just sit back and enjoy the countryside!  Have a nice day!

Martin - are you sure about the ATR's - unless I'm missing something, it doesn't look like the Cooper ATR's come in 18".

Yes, that's what I thought too - the web site makes no mention of that size in ATR's, but the tyre dealer definately had them listed in his book - he showed it to me and assured me they were available.
