Busted!!
Has anyone mentioned bearing shell rotation on the 2.7. Will dig out one of my vids for the result.
Here ya go. Hopefully they made a good few Norwegian Coke cans out of her.

Same on the 3.0 Del. My 3.0 made exactly the same noise as your 2.7 when she decided to misbehave Kev

D4
For me I drove some D3's with a view of upgrading from my D2, BUT the D3 felt heavy and clunky, not much better than my D2. (Sorry D3 owners) The D4 on the other hand felt really light and sparkly and altogether different. (I know its not so factual but its hard to quantify in another way)
I would go D4, crank problems, never heard of that. (put fingers in ears and sing la la ladeda la la laar)Discovery 4 3.0 HSE 2010 year. I like it a lot. Now with winch 😂

Interesting thread this as I am in a similar position! I have a slightly larger budget of around £12-13k
I am now unsure if I go 2.7 or 3
So much for this being the easy choice
Watching thread with dread!!

its not just the 3 Ltr engine that makes a D4 better than the D3 - if you can stretch to a 8 speed auto D4, then you should

Hi All,
I've finally got to the point where I can get myself a Discovery (HSE). However during my search I have noticed that late D3's and early D4's are not that dissimilar in price.
Now my question (as you have probably guessed) is what is the better option to go for? I'm looking around the £9k mark and there are a few early D4's (2010) with about 120k miles on that come up but there also seems to be plenty of late D3's (2009) around that price as well.
Are the late D3's pretty solid (water pump?)? are the early D4's good or did they have teething issues?
Many thanks for you advice.
Pezzer
p.s. I did try to search but seemed to get a results mainly around first impressions of the D4 when it came out.

Do not under any circumstances google Land Rover 2.7 snapped crank. Or oil pump failure or...
The V8 4.4 Jag is probably the only reliable engine that LR built. Here in the states many of the 4.4 V8 D3's have over 300K now. The 3 things you need to replace at about 80K is the plastic coolant breather T ($30.), the plastic PCV ($65.), and clean the throttle body. ($12)

V8 D3 are not that common over here though, and costs to fill the tank are huge for us.
Diesel was sold as the fuel of the future years ago, and now thats what nearly all big motors are. Shame as the V8's sound stunning.
however I would have to agree with an 8 speed 3.0 SDV6 D4 as being the motor of choice... just dont mention the C word and keep everything crossed

I feel your pain. Part of the reason I’ve left the marque after over 30 years was I’d just lost confidence in my D4,:even though she had been faultless. I used to be happy driving all over the remote parts of Scandinavia without a worry in my mind, on last trip (the one after Dark Bluie died in NW Norway) I was getting really concerned when I saw “no service” on my phone. Plus there was always the nagging question, “would they recover me from here?”. That was when I made the decision that she was going.
Miss the D3, don’t really miss the D4 though, mainly coz the D3 had taken me on so many adventures.

I know they are not common in the UK, but worth finding one, the extra price on fuel on the V8 is better than having the diesel D3/4 engine blow up on you after all the money you have spent into a D3/4 on services, maintenance and up grades.D3 2005 V8 SE Bonatti Grey "The Rhino" (our NYC D3)

Very True Dave, but the way i look at it (and i was the same with Freelander 2's) is that when you weigh up the number of failures (rear diffs on FL2) compared to the numbers sold... the % is very small
and i feel its the same as for the D4... how many sold against how many serious failures

I have only had my D4 for a couple of weeks now, but am very pleased with it indeed. Just sold a Mercedes coupe to buy this, as I needed more doors and seats with 2 grandchildren now!
