Mine 06, right strut was loose. Also, looks like it was for a long time. The screw look like a little bended but I could screw back normally. Everything looks good now. The left strut is very tight. If you are doing, be carefull to the door do not fall in your head. One strut cannot stand!

Left side fine, right about 4 turns loose, tightened ok, lube might help as the dry grip and torque from the strut will tend to undo the right hand strut but tighten the left. Caught just in time. As for cutting and welding, I think I'd try a threaded nutsert first!

Just found this thread and checked my tailgate struts, the right hand bolt had almost completely fallen out but the left hand was nice and tight. Both balls were dry and rusty and the right hand upper socket is very badly worn. Now cleaned tightened and greased but I think it is going to get new balls and struts in the very near future, it looks like these need to be added to the check and lubricate regularly list.

Great my right strut has just come out the tailgate door, so what are my options now?
Thanks

Reading through stuff on the site and found this mention about struts so went to have a look - left hand nice and tight - Right hand you could see it had come out by a couple of threads so tightened up now

TAILGATE STRUT MOUNTING
Saw this tip today and, on checking, found the right strut mounting was very loose. Used my slimmest spanner to tighten it up without having to remove the strut. Left side was fine. Many thanks to all for the heads up on this one.

Checked mine in a panic after reading this and hearing something rattling round in the tailgate, but thankfully both pretty tight just nipped them up with a spanner,

Also worth checking your mounts for the lower tailgate strap balls and also pins for locking lower tailgate. Fitted new cables to mine and both ball mounts were loose and adjusted the pins as lower tailgate felt loose when closed. All nice and tight now. 👍😊2006 TdV6 HSE.
