Now ive got this clampy tester thingy and read the destructions twice
should it be capable of measuring 12 v or is there a setting I should put it on to measure the voltage for the glow plug wires such as 2/20 A
I see in robbies guide he has the wires clamped and its reading in DC which I would expect
my clamp meter only have instructions using the clamp when measuring AC
have I bought the wrong one or can I use it set as above
bloody elect

Pete do I have to probe the wires as the RRS link whilst the glowplug is cycling , ie, whilst the light is being displayed on the dash
looks like I bought the wrong clamp meter so will use the multi meter at work

Daftlad the first thing is to look for continuity, if you look on-top of the engine (under the plastic cover) you will find the two sets (one to each bank) of three cables (one core to each glow plug) unplug each side and test each pin (the end that goes into the glow plugs), and look for a resistance between the pin in the plug and a good clean earth point on the engine.
If you put the details up of the meter we could then point you in the right direction.......
Good luck.......

If using a clamp meter to measure current, yes the ignition needs to be on.
And you have to ensure they haven't timed out!
It's a pain.
I don't like the method, but basically its :
Put the clamp around the wire.
Ensure its switched on and set to the correct range. 20A ? and reading approx. 0
Turn the ignition on and quickly run around and see if you have a reading.
If you don't have a reading it could be due to a number of reasons! (duff gplug, engine too hot, timer turned them off, wiring fault, relay fault, fuse fault, gplug too hot)
Turn ignition off ASAP to ensure the battery don't go flat, and other glowplugs don't heat up and give false readings when you go to check them next.
Move clamp meter to next wire and repeat.
TBH IMO the current clamp method to totally bonkers, and should only be used for advanced fault finding.

For simple resistance measurement, no one needs to be on the key. Just need a cool engine and looking for 0.8 or 1.0 R or 1

It may help......... or may not.......
Read that mate gives me head ache
I thought that might when I posted it yesterday LOL, I wasnt sure if it was going to help or not.
For a simple test just try the resistance test, it will give you a quick idea if they are any good or not.....
If you post a picture of the front of the meter we could help by pointing you on which settings you need.
I will send you a PM too.
Good luck

Bit of an update I did the test by putting a multi meter on each plug and ingot 50/50 on the bleep
2 on the right and 1 on the left

2 good on the right ?
what readings did you get on the good ones ?
It's worth checking to see if you have power (12v) on the yellow wires when you turn the igniton on (on a cold engine). (with meter set to 20V DC)
Test one on the right bank and one on the left as a minimum
