Glow Plugs

Hi,

Having completed a few jobs on my 178,000 mile 06 TDV6 that I've owned for just over a year the issue of faulty glow plugs is now working its way to the top of the 'to do' list.

I have read dozens of threads on this subject and feel confident about tackling this however there are a couple of points that I would like some help with if you can.

Firstly - having read Haynes and the LR workshop manual they both talk about removing a section of HP fuel pipe in order to get the oil separator out and they both insist that a new pipe must be used during the rebuild - do people put a new pipe in or just use the old one? If you have replaced the pipe can you recollect the part number?

Secondly - can you recommend a brand of glow plug that's going to last longer than a couple of years.

Many thanks,

Colin

I don’t believe a fuel pipe needs removing let alone replacing.

Just squash the oil breather to get it out

Some plastic pipes need removing, and the HP pipe needs removed to access one of the rear plugs

I fit Delphi plugs, seem to be good, time will tell I guess Laughing

Thanks for the replies.

It starts OK but sounds very agricultural for the first thirty seconds or so which is what made me test the glow plugs.

On the left bank (as seen from the driver's seat) I have two glow plugs at about 0.6 ohms and the other open circuit (now I wonder which one that will be!!! - green wire with the blue trace - I just know it's going to be the one next to the HP fuel pump). On the right bank the fusible link is blown as one glow plug is flat to earth (or maybe it's the cable), the other two read about 0.6 ohms.

Tactic will be to isolate the glow plug or cable that's down to earth and fit a new fusible link which hopefully will get me back to four working glow plugs rather than fitting the bodge for the temperature sensor - then I'll tackle wholesale replacement over the summer.
