As Caver mentioned, the software patch is only applied to vehicles that have previously suffered turbo failure. I guess that they think it could be due to driving style/usage and that's why it isn't applied to all cars by default.
Redex won't help at all. There have been some tests using some specialist products, but they are more of a temporary fix than a cure (look for posts by verydisco)
A dirty intercooler will effectively raise (as in not cool as much) the temperature of the charge going into the throttle body and cylinders so is more likely to show a slight (although noticeable) power loss at higher revs once the turbo is on song.
EGRs *may* show up as DTCs (definitely would on EU IV engines) but would depend on the type of failure I suppose, as could a delaminated hose. A fault turbo actuator should show up - especially if it has given engine systems errors on the dash.
When blanked off, the EGRs will continue to function (just not actually acheiving anything). Blanking them WILL NOT stop them failing mechanically in due course though, however even if they do fail completely on a EU III engine further down the line, they won't cause you any problems (maybe they'll log some DTCs but it won't affect you).
Blanking the EGRs is a very simple (albeit a little bit fiddly) job to do in 1.5 hours.
And don't worry - no-one will fall out.....the best way of learning about these faults and getting to the root cause is by arguing amongst ourselves....  2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Best route of elimination would be to blank the EGRs first and see if it works as it would be cheaper than a new turbo. If it does not fix the issue then look at the turbo.

So, once SWMBO was home I got the tools out and after discovering the lower bumper etc DOESN'T have to come off to get at the bottom of the intercooler pipe - just that dinky little plastic cover! Me Plonker!! Got the pipe off and discovered it to have a black oily deposit lying in the bottom bend but not, as posted before, in the top end at all.
Checked over all the outside and no signs of splits. Being unsure as to what signs of internal delamination would be had a good internal look and squeeze/feel along the length of it but it all felt similiar in resistance etc. In order to try it under "vacuum" conditions I fitted it back on" inverted" ie with top end in place on EGR butterfly unit but pipe upside down - like a snorkel. Started the engine and gradually slid my greasy mitt across the open bottom end till the engine started to falter. Plenty of "suck" going on and pipe gradually deforming as vacuum increased due to air intake being shut off by my hand. When hand came off engine note picked up ok which I feel it might not have done if internal lining of pipe was collapsing. Also tried a very short road test without the pipe fitted to assess the difference. Actually poorer initial acceleration and no "woosh" when it hit the 2200/2400 rpm spot. My feeling is the pipe is ok unless those more knowledgeable choose to differ? It would appear blanking the egr's is definitely next as has been indicated by the "founts". I would stress here I never felt they were wrong but thought I would start with the simple stuff first. I'll keep you advised on progress. D3's - don't you just luv them!

DUH! I was so impressed by the large amounts of "sook" being drawn into the intercooler pipe connection on the EGR butterfly unit that I totally forgot where the turbo sits in the system in relation to the flexible pipe!! PS - "sook" is a Scots word for create a vacuum. ie sook ma face wumman! ( Translates as - Kiss me heartily my darling! )

I thought that the software patch was included in the 'enhancement package' that was offered to all the UK customers a few years ago? For my part after the enhancement came out I had my remap re-done by Turbochip to one that was built upon the new code which specifically included the turbo vane cycle-at-start.

Yes it should have been applied to ealier biulds as part of the normal software updates. Could have missed out due to oversight or service by indie.

Bodsy, I lined the cavernous pockets of my local stealer just this afternoon with that very thought in mind. Only hit me for 25p each and I also got some of the little push-in plugs for the plastic cover to the intercooler pipe which I had decimated during removal. ( The plugs that is - not the cover!! ) Thanks for the thought tho'! Nick
