Gearbox flushing and gearbox oil filter replacement |
|
My Disco 3 has now done nearly 128k and although there's no indication of gearbox issues that I can see, I reckon it would make sense to have the oil flushed.
However, doing a bit of research, I see that there is an aftermarket gearbox oil filter, which is much easier and quicker to replace than the original. My question is, does it matter if I get the flush done before changing the GB filter or after?
Thanks, Darren

change filter before would make more sense. As you wouldn't have to pay for more oil (and risk of different stuff too)
Be aware the metal sumps are a pain to get sealed

Most just flush and don't replace the filter because of the sealing problems on the aftermarket metal ones. Kev

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't sure if much oil would be lost with the filter change, so thanks for clearing that up. Thanks too for the information on aftermarket GB oil filter fitting. I didn't know of the sealing problems. Is that with all the easier fitting replacements on the market? If the thinking is that GB oil filter replacement isn't that necessary, then I'd just go with the flush. Is that what most would do?
Thanks for the message Bodsy about flushing. I was Oxford way when I signed up to this forum, but now I'm closer to Swindon. Do you come out this way? If you do, then I'll be in touch to see what can be arranged, because I would like it done.
Thanks, Darren

Based on the advice on the forum, I just DIY flushed mine. I read somewhere on here that filters that have been removed have always looked good. Kev

Not bothering changing the filter, does seam the sensible way forward.
They look ok after 100K miles when opened.

Thanks Kev and Pete. I've decided just to go with the flush as you suggest.
Best wishes,
Darren

Btw, an Indy here mentioned offhand that they use ZF OEM pans intended for BMW X5. The pan is composite and the sill is separate. No issues with sealing, either.
FWIW, I too flushed mine and skipped the filter replacement.

Mine is on 150k.
I ordered a new sump/filter and 12 litres of transmission fluid.
I didn't realise what a pain in the it was to change the filter, so I decided to flush the thing anyway, my thinking was the oil cost me around £50, so worse case I just do it again when I have more time.
So removing the transmission cooler pipe and pumped out and pumped back in just under 10 litres of fluid before it suddenly changed from a black and very smelly fluid to something that was looking a bit yellow.
I then put all the pipework back together, got under the car and filled from the filler hole while the oil sat at 30-40ºc. Went through the gears a few times, kept checking the level and in the end used 11 litres, or just under.
The gear changes are amazing, plus I have also lost any clunks, even if you slow to a near stop and then hit the gas the change is not noticeable.
I thought I had propshaft issues or something, but no, it was all gearbox.
The gearbox that is silky smooth with nothing more than an oil change flush and gearbox adaptation reset.
The whole car feels solid again, it is amazing how much tighter it feels all round.
Not sure how much folk charge for a flush? But it has to be a complete no brainer and worth every penny.
My guess it is probably around £300, the price of the oil and someones time? If so, what a bargain. MY15 BMW 5 Series Touring
