gearbox breather pipe spitting oil - Why ?, anyone

For a while now Disco had been smelling of hot gear oil and smoke/vapours coming from the back of the engine
I traced it to the gearbox spitting oil out of the breather pipe
first thoughts were that it was overfull but on checking it did have the correct amount in
after some googling and searching on here I decided to lengthen the breather pipe up to the box where the aux batt can be fitted and I also returned the pipe into an old pop bottle to catch any that would come out, although I was hoping none would!
this did stop the oil from sitting over the back of the engine and for a while there was nothing in the bottle, but on checking today it is still doing it and managing to find its way up the extended pipe and into the bottle
I modified the pipe about 5 months ago and the attached image shows what it has caught

I would like to know Why is it doing it
it's a manual approaching 260000 miles
is it a sign the box is knackered, could this explain the slight judder I get sometimes

any help appreciated

TIA
Andy

Can only offer overfilled, or getting too hot. Obvious I know, but can't think of another reason.

Have you changed the oil recently?

Could the cooler be blocked causing over heating? plastic bag or something silly over the bottom of the rad?

A second thought, was the correct oil used to fill the box back up? I've seen tractor back ends spit their oil out when it the wrong oil is used and it "foams" inside and causes the mass to increase thus spitting some out?

Is that new oil really as dark as the picture seems to make it out?

Is the breather pipe connected to the gearbox at the correct point?- The breather pipe looks to be much larger bore than normal!
An Iid tool on live data would tell you the temperature of the oil, a failing bearing in the gb can cause oil to overheat and boil, it is amazing how much oil can expand when heated.

p.s. in the meantime make the plastic bottle safe with a couple of cable ties, it is sat over the top of a hot exhaust Thumbs Up

The ‘New oil’ has been in for about 5-6 months now
Thx for the bearing suggestions

The bottle is safe ,it gets placed in the aux batt box next to brake reservoir
And it is correctly connected Thumbs Up

How did you check the gearbox level? The only accurate method is to drain, and refill with the correct amount...

That’s what did originally Mike
I even drained it and re-checked it when I extended the breather because my first thought was overfill

After the breather pipe came adrift and noticing oil all over the drive way I refilled the gearbox to the level of the filler plug. Big mistake. Had to drain and refill with the exact amount! New breather hose from gearbox up back of engineto the side of the brake fluid reservoir. No sign of oil coming out of the hose and it’s been in place for 5 years. In your case just what is causing the pressurisation in the first place? Only a suggestion, since you are getting oil into the bottle drain the gearbox and determine how much you get out. Add the bottle contents and that will give you definite measure of how much went in, in the first place. If a bearing in the gearbox is goosed and causing excessive heat then I would have expected you could hear it when running under load.
Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.
