G3 snorkel installation tips. |
|
I have my land rover genuine g3 snorkel installed. The authorized dealer wich installed followed the manual, but I did not trust the thing.
In fact, the way it is, it does not seal a thing!! It looks great, but it seems that's all.
Any tip to make it works, or I'l have to glue a swimming pool aspiration tube linking the snorkel directly to the air filter box, as we are used to make in our old war jeeps?
thanks. Natanael

I take it that you have had a Land Rover Raised Air Intake (RAI) installed. This is not the same as a true snorkel. Safari make a true snorkel for the D3 but to be honest even with a snorkel you would not want to spend any great length of time with water on your bonnet.

Quite right,
The RAI is not sold to snorkel, more to keep dust out and minimize water entry. The air intake duct and air box itself have features to let the water out before it gets to the engine. If you fit a snorkel you are making a commitment to water proof the ECU and transmission modules as they are much lower than snorkel height.
It works well for dust, mostly helps it settle out before it gets to the airbox and catches small amount of water.
All the best

This might help I am sure the RAI could be turned into a snorkel.

Mine was much cheaper on paper but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in PITA playing around.
My choice would be the RAI and turn it into a proper snorkel. The only advantage to mine is it can be taken off leaving no holes in the body work.
Natanael, I see no reason why the RAI couldn't be turned into a snorkel though using a plate and cowling. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

As ianv said, you may well seal the RAI into a snorkel but that would suggest you're going to depths of water and for durations of time that would be puting the electrickery and computing mods under the bonnet at risk.
It's beyond me but is it possible to seal these too? 2007 Porsche Boxster (987) 2.7

Yep,
The wet electrics threat is one to be considered, I have wet mine and they responded straight away to a blow out ouf the connectors and cable ends, no damage. I disconnected the battery as soon as I guessed I had water in place and it was only 15 minutes work to get everything apart blown out and good as new. The ECU and Transmission module are extremely rubust electrically and well sealed. The connectors are all fit for purpose and 300mm above specified wading depth. We bring these challenges on ourselves. TDV6
