How does the FWD work on ice?
Imagine this. The back axle has a wheel that starts slipping on ice. The wheel is braked automatically and power transferred to the other wheel. This now slips. What happens now. Does the car automatically change the gear UP to increase torque or does it now try the front axle and the same thing happens. Result is no drive to any wheel. Ideally the system should play with the autobox but I am not sure it does.
So, what exactly happens?

I guess I should answer my own question and say 'it doesn't' but what does it TRY to do?
on a very icy road....(Wrynose Pass....Lake District)
we tried a few things as the road ran into moorland & there were no other cars anywhere near
...the systems will try all wheels & where ever the tyres get some traction the system will try its best to move the D3
a combination of all wheels "trying" at the speed of the system (electronic) saw us drive off the icy roadBREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.
Just think "Bambi".A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

Magic It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

On bare ice you can get it to grip with all the aids working for you. The secret for me is a very gentle throttle until it just starts to move then a lot more throttle than you would dare apply on a normal car and off it goes. Doing this it is easy to tackle reasonable upslopes with reasonable confidence on stupidly slippery ice.
Steering and braking are another matter as the size and weight works against you and physics just laughs in your face. Again, think Bambi on ice as the vehicle will slide off to places that a normal car cannot reach!

TR set to GGS, DSC off and gentle on the throttle gradually increasing as it starts to move. Works for me, not saying it's the correct way.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green
