To get the guard off for straightening get the vehicle up on a lift with as little fuel in the tank as possible. Identify the bolts you need to remove the guard, get some straps, loosen the bolts at one end enough to feed a strap or two between the tank and guard and tighten the strap round the tank and the chassis rail (and anything else that looks strong enough). Tighten the bolts again and repeat for the other end. When you're happy that the straps will hold the tank remove the guard completely, do it slowly so you can quickly tighten it up again if it looks like the tank isn't supported, a bit of tank movement is inevitable but as long as it doesn't come down more than an inch or so you'll be fine. We've (AndrewS mainly) done a few now to remove, straighten and strengthen the guard The End

Very helpful info Slimmer. I'm definitely going to put some reinforcements on like you and Andrew have to prevent having to do this again.
My SO seems to think it's crushed in on a corner and won't easily pop out, I don't see it, just a nice curved indent towards the rear center, but I guess he did when it was on a lift. Hoping Mr. Pessimist is wrong
Andrew bite your tongue! Since we'll be in the blue ridge backwoods, they'd probably chalk it down to another exploding meth lab I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

The plastic tank normally pops back into its original shape when the thin guard is removed. The guard is mild steel so anyone with a big hammer and some common sense should be able to straighten it out. Oh and beef it up

How flat should the bottum off the fuel tank protector be? Mine is in a nice curve espcially at the rear. Roel

Fingers crossed! I will defiantly beef it up (Should have done that before this )
Roel, it is slightly curved toward the rear naturally I believe. On mine there's an obvious un-naturalness to it lol. I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

Just thought I'd give an update, Dan and I got the tank done. What we found was that the sensor which is supposed to sit in a slot positioned on the fuel pump had dislodged and was laying on the bottom of the tank, that would explain why it would read full when it got to almost empty!
Changing it out really wasn't too bad, about 2-1/2 to 3 hours in all. Also added some reinforcements Seems to be working so far, knock on wood. Saved me close to $2K woohoo time for shopping! I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?
