Hi All,
Just after some help regards fuel and priming of my 09 D3.
Had the Water in Fuel message last week and cant get rid of it.
At the weekend I drained the fuel filter, then removed the filter completely.
I found no water in the fuel. Cleaned the sensor and put it all back together.
Used the ignition and the bleed valve under the bonnet a number of times but could not get any fuel to flow.
The tank pump does run when the key is turned.
I have taken the fuel filter off again and there is some fuel in there.
Today I had the AA round as I'm away and the wife needed the car.
They also could not get any fuel at the bleed valve or at the rail.
He said he manually used the primer leaver and ran the pump using his laptop.
He eventually left with it not running.
Do you need a certain amount of fuel in the tank to bleed the system? I guess its about 1/4 full and the front wheels are raised 20cm or so?
Any ideas would be great?
Thanks.
Jon

When you put the filter back in place, you have got all the pipes on top going to the right places. You could try putting another twenty litres in and see if that makes a difference. Once air is in the system it can be a pain. If pump does not run, check its relay and fuse under the bonnet, you can jumper the relay slots and see if it runs.

HI
Thanks for the tip.
I'll drop in some more fuel later tonight.
The filter is not like the ones I've seen on here.
Its a smaller cartridge that just screws onto a top mounting.
All the lines must plug in above and are not visible.
It was changed by LR Nottingham about 18 months ago - but thats another story

That type of filter is not fitted to the OPs D3 - anything from about 2006 has a push and twist canister and the fuel lines are not touched.

What is this primer lever - not heard of that before - where is it fitted.
Sounds like the lift pump is not getting fuel out of the tank - the obvious is not enough fuel so fill this up to discount this issue.
While the system should be bled through the valve on the fuel rail it is not needed as any air in the system will simply vent through the injectors.
Fill the tank, run the ignition for about 20 secs and switch off - run the ignition for another 20 secs and switch off - then try to start the engine - should not crank more than a few seconds before firing.
If it does not fire, check fuel at the valve and if there is none then the obvious is a dud lift pump in the tank.
The system is primed by pressure from the lift pump in the tank - there is no manual primer.

Ok I've got 1/4 tank of fuel now.
Run the ignition and I can hear fuel returning to the tank, so I guess the tank pump is doing something.
Also filled the filter with fuel and replaced.
Run the ignition 3 times but still nothing at the bleed screw and no starting.
I've never had any pipes off the filter housing so these are where they've always been.
Any other ideas?
Thanks.

well you could disconnect the 2 pipes at the rear of the engine (by the valve) (quick release connectors)
put some tray or rag under or point into 2 old water bottles and have someone turn the ignition on.
If fuel goes everywhere then the pumps working.
If you get no fuel after 30 secs, reconnect pipes.
Disconnect the fuel filter.
turn igniton on and see if fuel goes everywhere.

Ok as a last resort I've just taken the fuel filter off and turned the key.
Nothing, not even bubbles from the filter housing (that I haven't touched).
I can still hear the pump in the tank running and fuel moving?
Guess its the tank off next.
Funny it was fine before I touched it!!

Maybe a pipe is off inside the tank.
