No, not kidding. Probably saved Land Rover $10 USD in parts and, based on some of the comments here, some warranty repair costs.
I'm somewhat sure the tank can't get siphoned, however. Many vehicles here have screens or other methods to prevent hoses from being used.
Not having the locking door just "feels cheap" for this class of vehicle... but a serious offender would just break it anyway.
