Good morning all,
Long time reader, first time registering/posting.
Im currently moving across Canada, a trip of 5000km with vast spaces of nothing in between.
My LR3 V6 4.0 usually gives me 12.5L/100km on the highway, and 14.5 towing a trailer. My consumption has increased to 24L/100km between Thunder Bay ON and Moose Jaw SK (some 1300km).
It is unchanged whether or not the trailer is connected; I don't believe the resistance of the trailer is contributory at this point.
My nanocom isn't picking up any codes
None of my rotors are hot, the EPB is working fine.
Ive replaced the air filter, cleaned the MAF, and cant find any leaks on the intake side.
The spark plugs look like they've seen 30k km of combustion, but are fine.
I've tried a fuel injector cleaner for what thats worth (no effect)
Im a simple man. I think of consumption as a product of resistance and combustion. If theres nothing increasing the resistance, than it must be an issue with combustion, but air supply seems optimal, and I cant find an issue with fuel supply (if someone know a reliable way to test the injectors id be happy to hear it)
Any suggestions would be very appreciated. its -16'C here and painful to work on at the side of the road, but ive another 1900km to go, including roads recently shut down by the mudslides in BC.

I struggle with the l/100km thing, so have converted it for my benefit.
12.5L/100km = 22.6 mpg 24L/100km = 11.7 MPG
How are you measuring your economy (or lack of)? KM's covered between fill to fill or the lieometer on the dash?
Is it possible you've lost some fuel from the tank? Leaked or stolen?Richard

Carefully check your wheel centre temps, hiked consumption is a classic sign of binding calipers.

wind direction? tyre pressures? (trailer and car) poor quality fuel ? wheel bearings ?
Just trying to think of things that might affect this, a head wind out there can make a big difference (and to rule out)! The Disco isn't exactly streamlined I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

How did you calculate this consumption. Did you just rely on fuel gauge or tank fill? To me a doubling of fuel use whether towing or not indicates a possible leak. Did you have any black smoke coming from exhaust as this would indicate "too rich". Has any moisture got into the ecu behind battery? You could try a hard reset and see if the parameters have been restored (12l/100kms).

No diesel ( I wish it was)
Economy as displaced on the dash, and calculated at each fill base on fuel used and Km travelled. My calculations are consistently 0.5L/100km above the computers reported economy.
Its been consistent across 8 refilled tanks now.
No fuel leaks that I can find.
Ive had callipers stick previously and have checking both the EPB drums and rotors for temp difference each time I've stopped, and they've all been the same.
I did a hard reset after cleaning out the MAF, which briefly improved by <1L/100km.
I changed plugs yesterday, which may have helped a bit - got economy down to 22.5L/100km (from 25L/100km in the morning) by time I limped in to Calgary, though I think this is a reflection of gentle driving with manual shifts. The old plugs looked a little bit white, no blistering, tips still looked whole. I expected a heavy black soot from running rich...
Truck is at a shop here I trust, finally had a engine light come on as drove into the shops parking lot, so hopefully it will show a code they can do something about. I left my nanocom with my things at a friends house and don't know the code, but will post it when I find out.
Thanks for all the help team, ill let you know what comes of this. Ill get a shot of the spark plugs when I can get my phone charged

Faulty O2 sensor(s) should increase consumption but probably not double it… what about fuel injection?
I guess you’d have noticed if the vehicle wouldn’t have reached normal operating temperature but if it thinks it’s cold constantly (or there isn’t enough coolant to pump around) it might keep the timing in immediately-after-start mode.
Just some thoughts.

If you were burning (chucking) double the normal amount of fuel into the engine it would run very roughly if at all, and there should be enough black smoke out of the exhaust to block out the Sun and start another ice age.
You can't be burning that much fuel without it being very obvious there's a problem with the engine. So you must be losing the fuel somewhere else?yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Yeah that’s what I was thinking, too, but OP said the obvious ones had been ruled out.
FWIW, I’ve - at worst - managed to get consumption up to 20 l/100 km with two sticking calipers so an additional 4 liters is quite a feat

Hmm, well something's clearly not right, if it's not a leak the OP maybe needs a new calculator, but I definitely would not use the LR trip to get consumption figures.
You can't beat the old school method. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Another thought, do the actual road miles/km's equal the same as those on your dash as that would give you an error if not.
