Fuel Consumption with 5W-40 engine oil

I usually use 5W-30 and engine fuel consumption is between 16.9-18L/100KM
now I tried to use 5W-40 and engine fuel consumption is jumping to 20-21L/100KM

It's 2005 v8 HSE model, running for 229900 kms already
Anyone has similar experience? Want to share some input to optimize the engine performance?

Trying to reduce this crazy fuel consumption

Are you sure you don’t have a stuck piston on a caliper or two...? Or brake shoes stuck? There are many things which can contribute to excessive fuel consumption and not all of them are in the engine. My consumption was reduced from (at worst) 16.8 L/100 km to 13.5 L/100 km with shoe maintenance and replacement of a caliper.

Also, since you’re in the desert - have you checked how your air filter looks like or do you replace it regularly?

Brake shoes (EPB) stuck on either or both rear wheel can make the car use more fuel. Since it’s quite warm in UAE you might notice it immediately as tires and wheels are warm to the touch otherwise, too. Here north I noticed it kind of by accident since tire was very warm and it was below freezing outside. Thumbs Up

Brake caliper pistons, if they’re stuck, would also do the same. One piston on the left front wheel had rusted and gotten stuck; the rubbery parts had let water through and that eventually led to the undesired end result.

FWIW, last time I changed oil I used Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 5W-30. Before that it was Mobil 1 5W-30. My climate is different from yours, though.

Well I did 170 miles back from Wales to Southampton this afternoon and the lieometer finished on 26.9mpg.

Filled up in Abergavenny on the way back and tank now on 3/4. V8 likes the hotter weather.

If you have a read up on oil, the differences to fuel mpg with the thinner fuel efficient stuff are miniscule, but nowadays thats the way its all going.

I guess this thread will also end in V8 owners implying the petrols are superior to diesels... Whistle Thumbs Up

I converted the mpg to l/100 km and that is a truly awesome figure.

You keep going overtaking us until either your turbo, crankshaft, oil pump housing, EGR valves fail then we will sail back past, and sounding 8) doing it.
