Frontrunner Slimline II question

Hi,

Is there anybody around with a frontrunner Slimline II roofrack full length mounted on his D4?
I was simply wondering about the amount of space left between the bottom of the roofrack and the top of the roof itself.
The height of the front footrail will do as well.
I just can't see how's that only 7cm as per specifications
https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/u...ne-ii.html
but that's probably at the rear end of the footrail, not the front.

Oh, and what about their warning that this rack is not compatible with the OEM rear ladder? Is this because the ladder would hit the roofrack for some sort of reason?

thanks in advance,
Björn

I have one fitted on my D3. It is quite close to the roof, as the original roof rails are removed and the rack bolts directly to the roof. The OEM ladder hits the roof rack when the tailgate is opened, so I bought the Frontrunner rear ladder as well.

That's news John ! I never had trouble with the ladder touching the frontrunner roof rack.

Yes the "loop" at the top of the OEM ladder hits the roof rack, so the tailgate doesn't open fully. Does your roof rack bolt directly to the roof, or does it bolt onto the roof rails they supplied?

I fitted a full length to my D3 last month.

Mine came with replacement roof rail kit which lifts the rack off the roof.
There is easily 7cm gap between the rack and the roof on my car.

I have the Prospeed rear ladder and the top loops hit off the rack, I can open the tailgate about 90% of its full travel before it's stopped by the ladder making contact with the rack.

Roof rails supplied, I don't have either any more so can't check. The only problem I had was the foxwing because I had that fitted low so I could get in the garage.

Thanks,
That's interesting, didn't know you could bolt the rack directly to the roof .. it's not mentioned in their manuals 8)
Nice you mentioned the reason why they mentioned it wasn't compatible with the OEM ladder.

That would have been my next question, as it looks like the prospeed looks handy with the step off the handle. The frontrunner looks pretty similar to the LR one ..

From biskit's answer, I gather one doesn't have an issue with the supplied roof rails and the OEM or frontrunner ladder, one does have however with the rails and the prospeed.
You also run into issues when you bolt directly to the roof and combine that with the OEM and presumably the prospeed ladder, but not with the Frontrunner .. I still wonder how you fit the rack directly to the roof though Smile Especially when you have a full length rack ..

Thanks all for the replies, much appreciated Thumbs Up Bow down

The front runner rack and ladder will be designed to work together.

I had the OEM expo rack on mine before and that worked well with the Prospeed one.

I don't know how you could bolt straight to the rack unless it's the 3/4 one.

It's a good rack, anything can get bolted to it with the slats as long as you have a 8mm screw to fit in the slat runners. Have the wheel carrier, Go Pro mount, brackets off the side I'm going to use to fit my light bar with and some tie down rings and straps.
Next year it's roof top tent mounts and some other bits.

On the D3 I had the Cheetah roofrack and the OEM ladder.
It served well and was worth every penny I spend on it ..
IKEA-trips and X-mas-tree transport were not that horrible anymore Rolling with laughter

Oh, and the times luggage spent on the rack when crossing and spending time in Scotland ... Wink

Hence the reason why I really want to go for the slimline, although it looks like I'll need to rethink the way I added additional lights on the rack like I did with the D3 ...

On their latest full length design, you remove the LR roof rails, and bolt the rack directly to the roof, using the bolt holes that the rails bolted into. This apparently gives a higher load rating. But the new design also allows you to fit tables that slide in under the roof rack, which I plan to buy at some point.

I remember Disco Dunc saying my Frontrunner roof rack was higher than the one he had! Could that have made the difference? You could fit the table under mine.

I just measured the space between the roofrack on the D3 (wind cheetah) and the roof.
At the front it is about 130mm, at the end 100mm .. it was dark outside already, but it could make sense.
That gave me about 200mm of room to install lance 170 in front of the roofrack ..
According to the slimline II specs, that would potentially drop with 30mm ..

Thanks for the pic biskit Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the responses .. ideas are clearer now 8) 8)

Bernard, it looks like your roof rack sits further forward than mine. It's dark and raining out there at the moment, so tomorrow I snap a picture of mine.

That may explain why the ladder doesn't hit the rack ...
