Front wipers working intermittently |
|
I have a strange problem with the front wipers.
They only appear to work in full speed or when just pushing down the once.
But after a while and the car warms up the wipers seem to work in all positions.
But returns to the same problem the next time I get in.
Do I need to replace the entire mechanism.
Some electrical gremlins starting to appear!!!

Sounds like a relay fault.

Yes. under bonnet
Usually cars would have 2 relays for wipers. Not sure on the LR system.

Thanks Pete for the tip.
bought and changed relay today and all fine.
Just had the problem of trying to extract the faulty one without losing my fingers.

Which relay did you find to be the culprit? If it wasn't an expensive fix, it's something I might try with mine. My wipers work on low speed, high speed and single push-down-to-wipe mode, but intermittent/rain-sensing is borked. Local Landy guy said that it's the body control unit at fault (it's seeing the rain sensor signal, but not sending the trigger to the wipers) - but if there's a cheap potential fix I can try I'm all for giving it a go, as the BCU is apparently a very expensive replacement!

I replaced the relay in the fuse box in the engine bay next to the battery.
There were two for the front and rear wipers at the top of the box and marked on the description sheet under the cover.
I bought a replacement fuse for £7.00. I managed to get a replacement from Transglobal Distribution Mail order parts for Land Rover. They got the part for me the next day.
Took a while and nearly losing my fingers trying to get the relay out as they are so close together but all still appears to be OK.
I don't they the relay has ever been changed from the original most certainly not since I have owned the car from 2011.
I now have a problem with the central locking and considering whether the same might be the problem there!! The tailgate intermittently will not open which I know is a common problem.
Hope this will help you.

It is the relay without the two lines marked under the window symbol on the instruction cover

I think the two lines means fast speed.

Interesting that you mention your recent central locking problems. When I was chatting to my local LR indie chap about this issue and he said that the BCU was probably the issue, he did mention that the next symptom that I should probably expect to experience would be the key fob failing to unlock the car (apparently another typical early sign of progressive BCU failure).

there are intermittent moments the central locking will not work if pressed too many times, leave for a few seconds and is ok again.
where is the bcu and how to change??

It’s expensive
Needs programming as it’s the imboliser
And difficult to change.
