Front wheel hub assembly problems
Hello again,
My front wheel bearing has just failed catastrophically!
No warning, just a sudden boom on the dual carriageway and a fight to keep the car going in a straight line.
So I started replacing it today but managed to break my nice 1/2" drive ratchet whilst attempting to release the axle nut.
I'm not too keen on the idea of burning more ratchets but don't have an impact driver either.
Would I need a proper garage spec air impact driver or would a battery powered one be enough?
or should i be thinking more down the lines of 1" drive ratchets?
Thanks
P.S there was no need to use a punch to un-crimp the nut as it hadn't been crimped in the first place.

Never use ratchets for tight stuff!
Get a decent breaker bar. I've managed to undo the tight front hub nuts with a 1/2" drive breaker bar, and a bit of steel tube as an extension. Its a reasonable brand, cheap stuff will break on really tight jobs.Richard

Picking a blowtorch up later today and my 240v impact driver should be here before 1pm tomorrow.
Decent breaker bars were more expensive than the impact driver so I thought I'd try that first, been wanting one for a while anyway.
Thanks for the help

I've got mine off using an 800mm breaker bar, they're damned tight and still require a full body weight effort even with that lever!2011 D4 SDV6 HSE

A good ring spanner and a scaffold bar will do the trick try standing on the bar to use your body weight
Just done mine with a breaker bar and impact socket

3 flash indicators
All timing belts changed
EPB serviced
De cat fitted

I have a 240V impact gun, air impact gun and a couple of battery guns but wouldn't be without a decent breaker bar. Doesn't need to be very long either, if you have some scaffold tube to hand...quite a few jobs on the D3 that are hard to get a gun to.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Can’t say I struggle. Impact gun is the most used weapon of choice My D3 Build Thread
