Syd, there are two versions of the Mantec plate. One, the one you see in these pics, is for vehicles without a winch fitted and is sold directly by Mantec. The other version is for use with winch-equipped vehicles, is made by Mantec for Landrover and is fitted to Landrover Experience and G4 spec Disco3s and sold as a genuine LR accessory. Mantec are not allowed to sell this version directly to the public. You should be able to get this winch version from any LRAU dealer.
The winch version does involve you making some modifications to your bumper (cutting bits off it). If you don't plan on fitting a winch you can still buy the winch version and remove the extra brackets with an angle grinder. Hopefully this would cost a fair bit less than Au$800.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
You can get away without the bumper surgery if you remove the winch mounts from the plate with a grinder, or perhaps by hitting them repeatedly with a wallaby.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
You could fit an ARB Bullbar (with or without winch) and these come with a front cover plate to protect the intercooler like the Mantec plate. It doesn't look as cool as the Mantec sumpguard but will help protect the front of your D3 should you encounter another wallaby.

can you paint the mantec plate or is that a particularly uncool thing to do ?
do you think Knowsley Safari park will let me fit mine in the wallaby enclosure ? - I can think of anywhere else to find the required bracket removers in LiverpoolD3 05 SE (old one)

From the pictures it looks like the plate seriously restricts the amount of lateral (i.e. side to side) access to the tow loop compared to standard. - Any problems encountered when using it - especially around corners ?

I just put a shackle on it and rope onto that, not that I've been stuck for a while! No problem going round corners, you don't know it's there.

I don't think he means driving around corners, Del
Did find the plate restricted access to large shackles, but I've got ropes with 'hook-ends' (see the rope group-buy) which fit perfectly well.Disco 5 HSE Lux
