Front Left/Nearside Suspension - Leaking Rubber Boot?

As posted elsewhere I was under the car cleaning up and copper greasing the sump guard bolts and found this rubber boot to be a little oily.

Car was serviced recently, MoT'd and had a 4-wheel align done with no mention of any issues. I cannot see a leak from above and the oil seems to be only on the lower side of the boot. The boot itself has no obvious damage and looks in ok condition and the RHS boot is dry as a bone.

Anyone any ideas what (if anything) is wrong?

With thanks to my daughter's camera...

that's your steering gaitor. There's a load of grease in there, but yours looks like power steering oil or similar....

Thanks Bodsy, power steering oil... sounds like a cheap job. Big Cry

Didn't think the wet bits of the power steering system were near the rubber boot. I had presumed that only a greased bearing / knuckle joint lay underneath. Or am I being dull and you are actually intimating that the fluid has migrated from somewhere else?

Should I be looking elsewhere to aid the diagnosis?

Behind the gaitor is this.

(well the lower one of the two anyway.

There's normally just grease in there, so I'd be surpised if oil has got in.

I think you need to double check back where it could be seeping from for oil of some form...

I'll have another look around.

Guess there is a story behind your pictures above!

Coiuld be a broken seal in your steering rack. Take of the boot and check if there is oil in there. Also check your power steering oil level.
