D3 in the stealers again . Yesterday I had to climb a not too steep dirt track, bit like a green lane, anyway got stuck , only on road tyres, while trying to get unstuck, steering on left lock, there was a bang , then all drive was lost. It turns out that the front N/S drive shaft sheared, to quote the service manager at the stealers "clean as a whistle", he says it is the first one he has seen break like this anyone else had drive shaft problems Unlike the older Landys wher you could put diff lock in and at least be mobile, albeit 2 wheel drive, with the D3 you are well and truly shafted so to speak. I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

put it in rock crawl - that'll get the diff locked!
AndrewS has had a couple of issues with the same driveshaft but they were more CV explosions than breakages

Tried it in all settings, just came up with "Transmission Fault", "All special programs off" and get this one "Transmission overheating slow down"
Seeing as I was not moving. I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Out of curiosity, when it broke were you giving it a lot of throttle with the wheels spinning? 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

would have to say yes, however the surface was very slippery mud combined with road tyres = no traction whatsoever, DSC was not switched off, wonder if traction control had anything to do with it I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Think you were unlucky, seen plenty of D3's in that situation and nothing broke 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

I have had 2 front CV joints go whilst in super extended height. Also had the end of a drive shaft break off in normal height whilst trying to recover a stuck vehicle.
Once you have recovered the vehicle to a safe place.
Turn the special programs off then turn the vehicle off and let it go to sleep. Re start, engage rock crawl and drive slowly away In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Cheers Andrew I'll keep that in mind. Come to think of it I think mine was in "Super Extented Mode" when the shaft broke, from what the service manager says, it was the end that broke off this shaft as he said it was broken flush with the CV joint. How fast were you going ? Did you bottom her out by chance ?
Strange for it to go into ext mode on a dirt track.
You may have found some grip for a moment and with the wheels at full lock, put too much pressure on the CV joint.
Its always worth keeping an eye on the steering direction display in the Message Centre to ensure your wheels are not pointing the wrong way. In hindsight that is

Vehicle had slid sideways off the track, rear wheels down a bit of a bank, wheels spinnig trying to get out, but instead of forward motion I was just sliding sideways at right angles to the track, when I'd stopped going sideways the wheels started to 'erode' the soft soil/mud from under the tyres, car effectively bellying out on a bank now, with front wheels just about on the track and rear wheels dropped the other side of the bank, this is wher I think it decided it needed super extended mode, display was showing the vehicle raised but with what looks like a rock under the car.
I did have 4x4 display on, turning wheels from lock to lock to try to gain some purchase btu to no avail, the 'Bang' occured while I was on full left lock.
Thing is I'm still surprised that the shaft broke, could understand this happening if I was giving it some stick on a tricky rock climb on Mud tyres with a bit of grip, but with road tyres on mud I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Walked about a mile to a cottage then back again that isn't a bow, it's me trying to get my breath back,, very nice people called the game keeper who then called his mate to bring a tractor to pull me out, he then went on to tow me to the shooting ground that I should have gone to in the first place, about 15 minutes away. All very nice people I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Nothing to do with tyre grip. TC applied the brakes whilst you were giving it the loud pedal on full lock. BANG went the drive shaft. All my failures have been in soft sand with no grip. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
