Front differential oil leak...

Can anyone who has had a front diff repaired or replaced for an oil leak let me know how much was leaking?

My front diff is best described as damp, this seems to be emanating from the input shaft area. Its not dripping wet, but is damp around the nose of the diff, and extending right across the base of the diff. No drips are evident.

My 3 year warranty runs out on the 2nd December, and I feel that I ought to make time to get it into the dealer.

Hi Gareth

I've not seen my leak but apparently I have 2 on the front diff according to my garage(quite informative and trustworthy),so it's going in on Wednesday to have the diff removed, seals replaced and new oil filled all for £320!

Rgds

Darrell Thumbs Up

Gareth, that seal cannot be changed. You'll need a replacement diff, so get it in quick!

Gareth, the front seal can be changed quite easily if you have the tools to get the flange off - input seal costs about £10 i think, maybe a bit more

best to get the seal changed asap before the input bearings get worn - then it is a new diff thats needed.

it can be removed without effecting the expandable bearing.

I couldnt get the flange off myself but the local garage made up a tool to pull it off. They made it out of an old propshaft and something with a thread on it. sorry, should have taken a photo Rolling Eyes Embarassed

They did say they would rent it out if anyone wanted to borrow it !!

The seal can then be replaced and the flange re tightened without damaging the bearings and shims. Probably not a perfect as a new diff, but I reconditioned my old diff for about £160. that inlcuded new half shaft TIMKEN bearings and a new pinion seal. The seals are readily available from LR, whereas the bearings are not.

Its as good as new now and sitting in the garage waiting for the ebay diff I bought to fail Laughing

Gareth make sure they change the breather if you don't have the new type as in this thread

http://disco3.co.uk/forum/topic75831.html

then you're less likely to have a leak that you have to pay for!
