| Front diff bone dry.... action required? |

Hi I recently bought an 06 150k and have been working through various issues, I went to change the diff oils and the front was dry. Couldn’t believe it! Plenty of swarf on the plug but nothing crazy. I’ve seen no leaks so it must of been dry for months... I’ve since filled it and it’s very very much leaking out. How can it even be driving..!
I do have some noise when I take my foot off the accelerator, a slight ‘wear noise’ hard to put a name to it, I can feel it too, but it’s not like the diff is clearly shot and rattling to  .
But that’s my question, if it’s been run dry for some time do I clearly have to get a new diff or would a bearing kit probably do ok. I do want to fix the noises on accelerating and coasting and I guess it’s safe to assume the diff is to blame...? Thanks

Well you have to take the diff apart to do the bearings so logic says strip it and see what it needs, you never know you might just be lucky?

Thanks, so are the bearings lubricated by the diff oil..? Would you say it’s highly likely the noises I’m getting are from diff bearings and I should replace them as a minimum given it’s been run dry (I’ve not looked at the propshaft joint yet, im told it could be a source of noise, I’m fairly sure the wheel
bearings are ok)

The typical reason the front diff leaks is that the breather will be blocked and the expansion and contraction damages the seals. Once fixed, make sure you replace the breather with the new specification unit or DIY something better. A search for diff breather will turn up more info.

Yes the oil lubricates everything inside the diff casing, bearings/gears the lot.
I wouldnt take a diff out on a whim, but as its been run dry/has swarf on the plug and is noisy I dont think you have many options.
Cheapest/quickest option is new seals and oil, but if you think about it you have to pull all the props to change the seals and once the pros are all off you are nearly there anyway.

Yep I understand and makes complete sense, thank you I guess do the uj on the prop at the same time too.
I’m guessing it’s a good few hours work for this job is it, I think it’s beyond my comfort zone but have an excellent mobile mechanic or an Indy workshop.

If it's been run dry for a period of time scrap it!- it will always be unreliable, in the meantime pump some grease into it to keep it going while you obtain a replacement(second hand from site sponsor metalmonsterjunk.co.uk) It can when others can't,

My front diff had black oil when it was drained, and also swarfe(?) on the magnetic plug. Got my indy to take out the diff and he fitted a new bearing and seals kit. The big left hand bearing seems to be the one that breaks up and this causes a distinctive 'moaning' sound.
I don't think you have much choice, it's either replace the whole diff or replace the bearings. I personally wouldn't go down the second hand route as you may finish up with a diff that is not going to last that long.
The breather at the front of the engine compartment appears to be the main cause of these problems. It gets bunged up and the diff overheats. Also it doesn't contain much oil.
That's my take on the issue, for what it's worth. 2007 Disco3 2.7 tdv6 SE

Geoff 👍👍 was the moaning noise there all the time? Mines fine when coasting in neutral it’s just under load I can hear it and feel it, but my wife’s unaware of it (no surprise there) and didn’t notice it yesterday.. so it’s not obviously audible Discovery 3 2.7 TDV6 2006
