I'd love to know the answer to this as well. My old one had a diff whine from 40,000 and I would be a whole lot happier if someone could confirm there has been a part change.
In my case, part of the problem could be attributed to a blocked breather on the diff causing it to blow oil, so it may be something as simple as a redesigned breather could solve it? Just a thought.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

The breather has been changed, the differential ratios are also different for manual & auto boxes but not for diesel / petrol versions. the main cause of failure is the input shaft seal due to harmonic vibration from the transfer box - the transfer box has been updated but the front & rear differentials stay the same

I'm sure someone will enlighten us soon as to why they fail & what if anything LR have done to rectify the problem.
I did think that running MTR's for about 15k miles, most of which was my normal mix of 80% on the motorways, might have not have helped. But I thinking that I'm probably thinking out of my a**e.

Told you.
Many thanks TFC
So really I should have a new transfer box as well or the problem could reoccur in c.60k miles!

The front diff on my Feb 06 Auto was replaced under warranty after about 25,000 miles only Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

If the root cause is the harmonic vibration, then the front output shaft seal on the transfer box will eventually leak, if the cause is the front differential breather pipe, then the updated part will be fitted as part of the differential renewal process

Thanks again TFC.
My dealer has a very helpful technical team, so I'll quiz them as to the cause tomorrow.

Is this a whine when you lift off the accelerator ?

Simon, the diff. whine is with the throttle open. Lift your foot off the accelerator & the whine stops.
Because of that, I did initially wonder if the noise was coming from the turbo.

Just spoke to one of the very helpful & patient tech. staff at my dealer (T.H.White ).
He said the cause was the interior coating of the diff. flaking off & contaminating the oil.
New diff. has different coating & breather pipe.

Thanks LT.
I'm just looking for someone who can say why my whine happens when I lift off at 80. Whine present and diminishes all the way down to 70 then stops. No matter what gear, in neutral and whatever revs). Assume its transmission somewhere but I need to nail it down so my dealer can be more focused in their diagnosis (they won't drive that fast round Ludlow )

Well I took a technician out in my D3 with me driving. So that he could listen to the whine.
