front brake pads

Chaps

Do the D3 and D4 share the same front brake pads?

I know I've seen a comment from TLO about some D4's having different rear calipers, but again, are all the rear pads the same?

Cheers

well, got this down to a fine art now, 45mins to change the front pads. Same type of set up as D3, but I'd say fractionally easier with the calipers being a bit bigger.

I changed the pads not so much due to wear (albeit about 3/4's worn), but to see if it fixed a weird stopping sensation. As you came to the very last part of coming to a halt, it felt like the car was braking/not braking/braking/etc, but not like when the ABS kicks in. I think its fixed, as it hasnt felt like that since Sunday when I did them. Could it have been some sort of contamination on the old pads? They looked OK.

Anybody else had this type of "fault"

Chaps - need some advice - I've swapped the front pads, and whilst the feeling of braking/not braking has reduced with the new pads fitted, its still there. Its most noticable in the last few yards before you come to a complete halt. Its as though I'm gently pressing and releasing the brake pedal (so not as fast as the ABS operating), even though I've a constant pressure on the pedal. I dont think its the discs running out, as I've had that before on the D3 with some non-standard discs, and could feel this through the pedal and the steering wheel. In the current case, there is no "pulsing" felt in the pedal or the wheel.

Ideas?

Hi Al.
I would suspect the brake discs.
Rather than being warped in the normal way, they are, for sake of simplicity of explanation, thinner in some places than others.
Look carefully at the surface and you usually see a difference in some places, hot spots, making the surface harder and softer in others.

Regards
Steve

I think that I am having the same trouble, not always, but when braking towards roundabouts etc it feels like a slight wobble on steering something similar to (although less pronounced) a speed wobble when wheels need balancing.

Pads look OK and discs look OK on a quick examination as my first thought was warping also.

I had disc run out on my D3. so know what this feels like. Easiest way to bring this on is at about 60, just brake very gently, and the steering wheel will wobble. As soon as you brake hard, the pads grab the disc and the wobble stops (or reduces quite a lot).

I'm not getting that on this D4, so thats why I didnt think it was runout/warped discs, but Steve is suggesting different thicknesses (a new on on me).

Cheer Steve - given the car's done 25k miles, the front discs dont look very worn, so my thoughts right now is that its had new discs before I brought it, but perhaps poor quality ones.

Al I think your description of the problem is spot on i.e. on gentle braking there is a wobble but on hard braking no problem.

Only 18k miles so discs as fitted new but seem to be the problem as Stev suggests.

@jeffersj - I'd suggest that your issue is warped discs, as this is what causes the wobble. New discs should fix it (good quality ones, not cheap rubbish)
