Just wondering if anyone has done the exercise of weighing the front axle of a D3 in normal situation and then weighing with caravan hooked up. I would be very interested in the difference and hopefully stop some of the Disco knockers.
I plan to do the exercise with my own van, at the first opportunity I get, but just thought someone else may have already been through the exercise.

There is no need to weigh it as it can easily be calculated. The maximum permitted nose weight of a trailer is 150kg. The tow hitch is about 1200mm behind the rear axle (depending which tow bar is fitted) and the wheelbase is 2885mm. Treating it as a simple lever, the load of 150kg on the hitch will lighten the load on the front axle by 62kg and increase that of the rear by 212kg.
Since the kerb weights are 1450kg on the front axle and 1850kg on the rear the maximum towing weight will reduce the front weight by about 4% and increase the rear by about 11%.

Could you pass on that calc, could use it if it could help me
in some HGV multi trailer applications, to pin down the 5th wheel/
king pin positions with some simple basic math, in relation to axle
group centers ( wheel base ). As some times the engineers place
a CG that will not work with the application, and the weigh bridge
guys have a field day with us on weight distribution issues D3 bullbar-spots-roof rack with spots-ladder-long range tank-swing out spare wheel carrier- upgraded tow bar-dash console-internal water tank-duel awnings-drawer system & T T.

I treated the car as a lever with the fulcrum being the rear axle and the front axle and the towing hitch being at the two ends. The lengths of the two parts are 2885mm for the front section (wheelbase) and 1200mm for the rear (hitch ovehang from rear axle).
To support 150kg at the hitch we need to apply a downward force of 150 x 1200/2885 = 62kg at the front axle. This will have the effect of reducing the loading on the front axle by 62kg. The additional load applied to the rear axle will be 62 + 150 = 212kg. In effect, this is the load transferred from the front axle plus the load asupported by the hitch.
You could calculate the loadings by treating the front axle as the fulcrum and this would give the same results. There is an article about levers in Wikipedia if you need the theory.

I think you will find the maximum nose weight is a lot more in the rest of the world. Our Aussie members talk about towing with 300Kg noseweights.

Axle load is the load on the ground across the vehicle.
I think he wants to be able to demonstrate the effect of the down load on the towbar has on the weight at the front wheels.
It would be interesting to know a comparison with other vehicles eg Tojos.

Weighbridge already done by "CVan and Mhome" magazine last year with a D3, the results were using a standard AU spec hitch, having 180kg nose-weight resulted in 60kg less on the front wheels.
OZ specifications for maximum tow-ball down force is 350kg.
