Ford v6 gas engine: timing chain replacement?

My '06 V6 LR3 jumped timing at 180K miles (P0012 code along side with (unrelated?) P0328 and P0333 [Bank 1 & 2 knock sensor circuit too high] ).
Is this an engine-out operation or can the timing chains/cassette/tensioners be replaced while the engine is still in the truck?
That's the Ford "Cologne" v6 gas engine. All videos of that engine being rebuilt are off-vehicles.

Assuming engine is still good (i.e. valves not bent), can the timing chains/cassettes be replaced while engine is still in the vehicle?
Roughly, how much time should be allocated to the job?

(I happen to have replaced my GTI engine earlier this year..... I guess 2024 is the year of blown engines.... Neutral )

I'm making assumptions that the timing jumped, but I was not driving. Son said he heard bad engine noises (metal on metal?) and stopped on the side of the road (luckily, this was at 25-30mph). I have not tried to restart the engine. I was planning on turning it by hand first to see if I can feel any interference and then look through the sparkplugs holes with a borescope for any sign of hitting.

Hi, I am pretty sure that this would be a body off procedure. But I understand that the engine itself can stay on the chassis.

I vaguely recall that this would be needed sometime after 100k miles. So if it had lasted 180k that seems to have had a good inning.

I've got the same V6 cologne engine. Mines just done 170,000km / 105,000miles. Should I get the timing chains done as preventative maintenance? No rattle coming from engine at idle.
I'm in New Zealand, Taranaki, North Island. Just not sure whether to talk to my local indie or go to a LR dealership.

Local garage said, for them, this was an engine-out operation that would take a week. So..... 40 * $200 = $8K (USD) + parts. I'd think $10K once all set and done (that's assuming the engine is not totally dead).
I can have a decent LR4 at that price.

If you do the work yourself, then this is a very different conversation (I'm slow.... so my wife said "not an option" after I did an engine swap on our GTI! Smile I did learn a lot in the process though! ).

You can wait until you heard rattle noises. Now that I know.... I think I heard them once. But.... My kids drive it and noises don't seem to bother them...... I also don't know when/if a code was thrown earlier.

Indie, be prepared for a large bill. Seen some quotes circa 10K AUD for chain replacement which is about the value of the vehicle.

Yeah I spoke with my indie garage man this week (annual WOF inspection = equivalent of UK MOT).

No sign of any rattle from timing chains, so he is saying leave it alone.

If timing chains fail in the future I would just scrap it. Over last 6 years I've got my monies worth. It's been a good tow vehicle for both caravan and boat.

I am however about to order steel pan with separate filter for the auto transmission and get my indie to do that job. At 170,000 km it's still got the original plastic pan. Going to get that done next month.
