Followed and Stopped for using a Byeway
We had a boys (and 2 girls) day out on Friday from the office, took my D3 and one of our guys has a 90. Did a few lanes round Petersfield and we noticed that another 4x4 was starting to follow us, after a couple of lanes we stopped and the guy behind jumped out and asked what we thought we were doing.
Everybody was still in the cars apart from the 90 driver at this stage and the guy claimed we had driven across fields and all sorts and wanted to know who we were. We politely told him we had stuck to the lanes and had also checked there were no restrictions etc so it was perfectly legal.
The others decided to get out to see what was happening and he started laughing as the first person out was wearing his sailing jacket, the accounts lady jumped out in leather boots, one of the designers got out in £150 jeans (to be fair we laughed at those as well) and white trainers etc, another guy stepped out in suede shoes ................
Despite his aggressive manner, he then started laughing (a lot) and said now he had seen how we were dressed he knew we weren't the people he was looking for. We were not sure whether to be pleased or insulted.
He thought we were poachers after Deer & Pheasants, turns out he was the estate game keeper. He then proceeded to tell us all the good lanes and that he enjoyed driving them as well. He then went on to shake our hands and wish us a good day.
To be honest I thought we had come across a rambler in a 4x4 at first

Experience is a difficult teacher, because she gives the test first and then the lesson afterwards!!!!

We should have a little meet over Christmas, the lanes were actually pretty good and there are a few miles of them. Had to use hill descent on one of them as it was quite steep, probably too steep and slippery for people to comfortably walk.
I'll have a chat with the guy who drives the 90 and organise something.

This time of year is always a bit iffy for keepers, more poaching happens at this time of year, working days/nights are very long and if they are a big commercial shoot their biggest days will be now so they will be desperate to stop people disturbing coverts. We aren't the only ones that have to put up with bobblies!DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

I don't blame him at all, he was very pleasant in the end and apologetic. It was also quite amusing as well.
Not sure why you need to poach pheasants, all you need to do is drive down the lane to our office and you would be able to get 5 or 6 of them. Whenever they see a car they dive in front

You don't Poach them.
You hang them for a while then roast them at gas mark 6 for 90mins

Unfortunately despite game dealers paying about 50p for a pheasant stealing hundreds at a time is still big business and not about the old boy out mooching with his dog and catapult
But having pheasant, partridge, mallard, pigeon and woodcock for lunch today I can vouch how tasty it all is and we should eat more of this healthy ecofriendly food DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Paul, shame it's not also Eco for economic; must cost almost twenty times that 50p to raise each bird.
Having seen what the butcher is asking for a small free-range turkey, I'm tempted to serve game at Christmas lunch this year.Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

Most the cost is footed by the shoot, many shoots charge guns £30 upwards plus vat, even £40 down in the west country. A good keeper will see 50% of the birds released shot and paid for it is a difficult way of making money, especially in the current climate. We should eat more game and it should be more accessible, it is a quick cheap meal in our household, pheasant breast stuffed with feta cheese wrapped in parma ham, takes 20 minutes and is delicious. Pigeon breast lightly floured and fried for a few minutes each side - I'm feeling hungry now and seriously OT!
Go for game DL, a Copas or Kelly's turkey will cost in the region of £100. Some partridge pheasant and pigeon will leave you with sufficient for some seriously good wine to wash it down and taste much better DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone
