I think the clue is in the term given to the lights..."fog lights"...they are to be used when the conditions are foggy
Not when it is a little bit misty nor when there is no fog. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

yep been illegal for years to run with fog lights on in daytime or conditions that do'nt warrant there use
Fixed penalty fine on a whole range of "does and dont's" going up as of Feb 2011 including £60 for illegal spacing in number plates/obscured plates due to dirt
I would be concerned that if caught by plod using this light conversion ie HID you'll be asked to send the vehicle to be re-mot'd after being issued with a "prohibition order" at the roadside........ as a consequence HID light conversions will be an instant MOT failure as of Nov 2011

Fog lights (front or rear) should only be used during conditions of seriously reduced visibility. The offence can indeed be dealt with by way of a non endorsable fixed penalty notice of £30.

Not an MOT failure yet ....but as far as Plod is concerned then you might like to note
Quote:While not an obligatory lamp they must comply with the following where fitted:
No more than two to be fitted on motor vehicles first used on or after 1.4.91
Colour - White or Yellow
Markings:
First used before 1.4.86 - No requirement
On or after 1.4.86 - Requires an approval mark as per Reg 4&5, Motor Vehicles (Designation of Approval Marks) Regs 1979
Width - not more than 400mm from max width point of vehicle
Height - Not higher than 1200mm
Must be kept clean and in good working order (reg 23), not cause undue dazzle or discomfort, be used when parked or be used except in seriously reduced viability (reg 27)
So on the basis that your HID's won't have an Approval mark ...they could put you in a pickle if a well read Plod catches up with you. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Geoff, it's an 'E' mark to comply with UNECE regulation 98, it should be stamped or visually indicated on the unit and in any documentation that came with it. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Hi Geoff
The bulbs are 6000K
I upgraded my fogs a while back - and they cut through the thick fog heaps better than the yellow halogens
I doubt Mr plod would ever bother you for driving in real fog with them on.
There is an option to have the front fogs come on with the side lights in the set up file
Just a note - these H11 HID bulbs are the H11R - and have extra special coating to prevent glare. A normal H11 cause a big halo so PLEASE do it without a H11R - the halo would bounce back and glare you in fog also
Regards
Ian

I was looking at replacement LED bulbs for fog-lamps in Halfords the other day & noticed, on the back of the packaging, a warning notice stating that 'these bulbs are NOT road legal' !!
Not sure why they are selling them if that's the case, but it seems as if there could be issues about the legality of these brighter bulbs in fog lamps. Happiness is a warm ruck

is it where they are mounted or what
