to flush or not to flush

Hi folks thinking about changing oil in disco 4 gearbox. I was toying with the idea of having it flushed but was told by a ZF specialist not to his reasoning being that all of the flushing fluid does not come out, what is the general consensus.

If you flush with a machine you replace significantly more (in practice almost 10 L) than by dropping the pan (4 L or so) and then replacing the lost volume of ATF. IMO, in the latter you only dilute what you had there.

You might want to search this forum, there are plenty of different opinions. At least three different methods available:

- drop pan & change filter
- filo flush (I think it was originally for a D3)
- mega flush or machine doing it

Thumbs Up

Find a new ZF specialist who knows what he's talking about and not looking for future work. ZF recommends an oil change* every 75k miles normal use and every 35k miles if working hard Shocked

* drain and refill the sump twice.

It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The GB should be flushed with the same oil that is used in the GB, so there will be around 10ltr left in Whistle

ok then if there is no flushing fluid involved a flush would be the best way to go

Doing a self flush is not remotely difficult. Plenty of info on the site about how to do it. Having an IID tool would help with the temps, but if you were considering dropping the pan yourself, then doing a flush should be well within your capabilities.

Hi folks just got back from Durham 4x4. Got gearbox flushed, didnt think it would make much difference but it seams to be pulling away a lot better and just running nicer all round, got the transfer box done at the same time, £283.73 all in very happy.
