flat battery
Car has been in a garage for a few months, now totally dead. Bonnet is open and have now found the battery but the instructions make reference to "do not connect the black cable to the negative terminal of the discharged vehicle' but instead to connect the booster cable to a 'suitable earth point' on the disabled vehicle…..WHAT ON EARTH DOES THAT MEAN? Instruction manual, as usual, entirely useless.
All help appreciated.

It's better for the battery to charge it rather than a boost or jump start.
The precaution over the negative lead is to avoid sparks near the battery as it could vent hydrogen. Any solid lump of unpainted metal under the bonnet should be a good ground. Avoid anything that looks like a brake or fuel pipe though. There are some bits of engine that make for good attachment points if you lift the plastic cover.
Welcome to the forum and the chances of you exploding should you connect direct to the battery are relatively small.
