Firstly if I buy the kit from LR can I fit them my self (are there push connectors on both ends) or is it a job for them, secondly how much should I be looking at spending for the electrics, fitting.

You can fit the electrics yourself quite easily, but you need to get the dealer to tell the car they are there, this requires connection to their computers to update the software.

I believe it's easy to self- fit. Get the instructions from LR OWners website- download the pdf. It looks easy.
I'm about to do the same- what would be a good price? Discovery 3 tdv6 7 seat Buckingham Blue

It' an easy job to do yourself, takes about 15-20mins, hardest bit is getting the cable behind the suspended weight. Yes push fit at the light end, already hard wired at the socket end The End

Expect to pay around £150 - £160 for fitting at a dealer.

Why is there a need to “tell the car†that the trailer electrics are there ??
I’ve mine fitted for ages now & it all works perfectly. Including the very impressive feature of the car disabling the rear PDC when it “sees†the trailer lights !
Is there something more it needs to know ???

Bought my kit from Nick at Yeovil Land Rover ( details in the for sale bit of this site ) at 20% off LR price plus £5 postage - cheaper than they seem to go for on ebay.
Fitting took about 30 mins and I am a barely competent DIYer. Haven't been to the dealer to get the kit "added," yet everything works perfectly - PDC cancels and little trailer light illuminates on the dashboard when in use.

Looks like my dealer told me some false info then, he said they have to enable them in the software, but this is obviously not the case. but can't complain he did fit them for free when I purchased the car

Just looked at the PDF's, and there are 2 type types of "electrics". Which one for the UK market .. OR .. what's the difference between 1 or 2 plugs ??
Never really been into towing, but looks like I'm going to soon.. Even the D3 can't take all lads the "bands" kit in one go now ... ..............Somewhere in-between my old D3 and what's to come next .........

Fitting your own tow bar and electrics |
|
Can both the tow bar and electrics be fitted DIY if you buy the manufacturers parts?

Yes they can, tow bar simply slots into position, takes about 2 mins, and electrics can be fitted very easily.

If the car needs to be told to inhibit certain suspension functions. To all intents and purposes you will see no difference, I had factory fit electics on my first car and the car hadn't been told, but I never noticed the difference after. My latest car is no different either! Maybe ask them to do it at the next service if it worries you! DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Fitted mine last night (thanks Nick from Yeovil LR).
Took 50 mins, but that included my 4 year old son 'helping'.
Hardest part was getting the d@mn spare wheel cable back into the wheel.
As mentioned above, it's very easy to do, and all connectors are already there. The N & S electrics screw in to the rear of the car, wires thread behind the bumper (need to take spare wheel off) then out at the nearside light cluster.
The wires connect to plugs in the rear n/s side panel (where the towbar storage is) - there is a separate wire that feeds from there through to the light cluster area. Some of the gaps for feeding the wires through are quite tight and need a little patience, especially behind the suspended weight.
The light cluster comes off with 2 screws.
I believe that the standard 'dealer time' to fit is 1 hr- ie £100 at LR standard rate. It would have taken me 35 mins but for my son's 'help' and the fiddling with spare wheel.
So- I can't help feeling that (a) their standard time for the job is poor value and (b) any idiot can DIY in an hour, saving £100 for better things Discovery 3 tdv6 7 seat Buckingham Blue
