Fitting some mods - Riv Nut help !
Hi Guys
Going to attempt fitting the rear lamp guards and RAI this weekend. So I need a Rivnut fitting tool ! Seen one on ebay for £9.90 but its only 4,5 6 & 8mm. On the basis te drill bit is 7mm I assume this won't work ? Could you assit if this will work or where I can get one that will (cheaply). The one i've seen is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RIVNUT-SETTING-TOOL-...23053a85cc
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If the hole size you need to fit the rivnut is 7mm then it must be a 5mm rivnut"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag'em down to your level. It's cheaper".

Rob, you need to drill a 7mm hole, in which you will probably find the rivnut supplied will fit with some gentle persuasion.
From memory, the provided rivnut is 5 or 6mm (the part you need to thread to the tool), so you should be fine with the one you have in mind.

HI
i put my riv nuts in by putting a bolt through the riv nut end with a nut half way up the shaft.
turn the bolt till the nut touches the rivnut.hold the end of the bolt in a pair of locking pliers then screw the nut clockwise. this pulls the rivnut against itself and it collapses like a rivet.then unscrew the bolt and remove and it leave the rivnut locked into the hole.search out "fitting rivnuts"on google and the instruction in full come up,with pics too.
a cheaper alternative to buying the tool
good luck

I have fitted rivnuts and I would certainly recommend the tool in your ebay link as that is the one that I got. Look at it this way, you WILL end up fitting other gear so why not. If you fluff the fitting of a rivnut by the other non conventional methods it would be a pig to remove neatly. Either that or get some extra nuts for a good practise first, remembering of course how thin the bodywork is aswell.Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:

Pointyed, I have to be honest and say that I've tried that method when fitting my RAI and althought it could well have been the fault of the fella assisting me but it ended up a of a job. At that time if I could have bought a proper tool to do the job for £1000 I'd have done it
Spend the money Rob, well worth it at a tenner A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

When I fitted the RAI I did the rivnuts the manual way with a bolt and nut and didn't have any problems. There is, however, a good chance of it up so if I could have bought a rivnut tool for 10 quid, then I would have bought one without thinking twice.... 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

Just be wary of stainless rivnuts. These tools are only for ally ones as I found out to my cost. It makes a real mess trying to drill out stainless with a mandrel stuck inside it
At the time I thought stainless was a good idea - corrosion etc. I now know why it isn't, you need a 250 quid tool with special mandrels to set them. Ejit !!
Some days I question how I got to the grand old age of 45 without winning a darwin award.
