Fitting Expedition Rack to MY07 D3

Eventually I have got around to fitting the expedition rack to the D3. Read all the instructions (twice) until I understood and it seems OK to do if you have six arms and are 8 ft tall.

Anyway, part 1 of the fit instructions tell me to remove the black strip covering the front rack mount, fit a retainer, mark it on the strip and drill a 19mm hole in the strip. However, I see there is a blanking plug fitted on the strip in what seems the right place and I am wondering if an un-noticed change in spec is to have actually made the strip with the hole precut and covered by a plug. Is this right? The plug is well held in and may disintegrate removing it so I want to be sure that this is indeed improved access to the mount point before I apply deadly force to the cover. Anyone done this?

If I was to cut a 19mm hole in the strip, there will be no strip left and I'm sure that is not right. Is the strip narrower now?

The rest of the fitting seems OK

Ta in anticipation!

I'm pretty sure if you have an '07 model then you don't need to drill anything. Wink

you are right the plug is in the correct place for the front mounts of the rack.

LR only put these from 06 onwards.

You still have to lift the strip to put the plate under it tho

........ ..... I'm having trouble understanding why this hole needs to be a massive 19mm also,(compared to the strip), AFAICS , only a relatively small allen bolt goes through it. Any idea of the dia of hole pre cut in yours Alex08 ? or anyone else for that matter, to save me climbing up on one at the dealers to have a look. Wink

Agree. When taking the plug out on MY07 the hole is about 10mm only. If a 19mm hole was cut the strap would be in 2 bits. If I had cut a hole, it wouldn't have been 19mm!

I would send a picture, but the rack is now in place. BTW, if you have the plugs and are trying to remove them it is easier to unscrew them than to pull them out as they bind into the threads designed to take the mounting bolts.

Thanks Alex08, mine hasn't got the strips with pre cut holes, if I do fit an expo rack, I will try cutting a 10mm ish hole like yours, as I don't think it's necessary to go LARGE, we'll see. Thumbs Up
