Fitted a Phone Box to my Discovery
Posted this in the what did you do in your D4 today but I think I probably should have dropped it here. Definitely more of a mod than an activity!
My wife’s car has a wireless charging device under the central arm rest which Audi market as The Audi Phone Box.
With no truly ideal place in the Disco to store my phone while charging (without consuming a cup holder) and not fancying the risk of leaving a £1000 item on near constant display every time I was in a petrol station etc, with a Brodit or similar, I thought to create my own Discovery Phone Box
Shared the idea with a friend of mine at work who is something of a 3D printing subject matter expert in the enthusiast community and overnight he designed one for me in CAD and printed it. This kind of creativity and technology never ceases to amaze me. Made some design improvements to Mark One and now we have Mark Two, which I am pretty pleased with.
Couple of design tweaks that could be made, firstly to also add cable routing options out each side as well and secondly, to look at 500ml bottle fridge compatability. I don’t have a fridge (yet!) so not sure if it is any deeper or shallower (anyone?) but my standard cubby leaves a 500ml bottle frustratingly and truly fractionally too high. This is based on the single 500ml bottle type I had (costco sparkiling) - other bottles may vary. Base is fully flat and if other bottles fit, I’d be happy to leave it as flat and it will definitely take a couple at least on an angle. We’ve pretty much stopped buying water in bottles anyway.
Coke cans etc will fit for sure and I squeezed 8 cans into my cubby with the new lid on. Pretty sure that will drop to 6 with a fridge though due to the extra forward bulge in a std cubby. Possibly the only time I will have a forward bulge 8 pack.
Design has holding features to support a std phone (east-west) or a ‘max’ phone (north south), with some wiggle room for case width and still hold very centrally on the charger. Shown with an iPhone 12
So now I can just drop it in there and it will charge away out of sight of prying eyes should I choose or forget to undock it when I stop.
Oh and it can still store coins…….. a nice little mod I think?

That's a really good idea. I saw Powerfuluk do one for the Evoque I think, and I thought it'd be a good mod for the Disco.Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

Had also seen one from them and very nice it looked too but it consumed the cup holders which I felt was just too big a trade off. Land Rover do a nice drop-in style one that mimics a cup but again, it consumes a single cup position, leaving just one. I have a wife - we all know how that goes…..
Again, all other solutions leave your phone in view. - getting to be more of a thought all the time as phone costs go up and petty crime does too. Think this is a good solution for an area of the car I don’t use too much.Corris Grey SDV6 D4 2015 HSE

Thanks for all the comments folks - still considering if I need to tweak in readiness for a fridge and while my mate is still (maybe ) willing to print me another one.
I wonder if someone with a fridge would be so kind as to give me a good measurement on the depth to the lip the coin holder sits in please?Corris Grey SDV6 D4 2015 HSE

Love the idea of this but given that I use my phone for the navigation apps I need it to be on display where I can see it easily when driving, that said it did prompt me to check if my phone can be charged wirelessly (which it can - didn't know that!) so have ordered a wireless charger to see how well that works at home first I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!
