First three months of D3 ownership.

So in a little over three months of owning my D3 I’ve had to accept it’s going to be a troublesome relationship and that I might have made a bad call after I brought it for a reasonable price with a ESF which I thought to be a seized turbo actuator and had hoped for an easy fix. Rolling Eyes

So This is mine....

If you or you know if anyone that recognises the registration BP 55 FTE then please do get in touch!

I’ve had most the standard D3 HSE issues it would seem.

First fix was a simple enough bonnet catch, modified to save having spend out a new one.

Next was the sunroof drain, passenger side was full up! New elbow fitted with lots of swearing.

Not long after I had a burning smell which turned out to be the towing electrics

Then it developed a rattle which turned out to be the prop bearing.... time to change that then, excuse the mess!

Then it was time to tackle the turbo issue, well you’ll see from my other posts it wasn’t the simple fix of freeing the actuator, new turbo time! I don’t have a work shop only a yard and it’s not the best part of the year to be crawling round on the floor outside (is there ever a good time of year for this?) however my biggest issue was getting the Censored apart, the thing needed some TLC after it’s clearly been used in the sea.

Got there eventually with some help from Mans best friend and while I’m here a shout out to the guys at turbo technics, impressed with their help and the fact the turbo came with everything I needed Thumbs Up

These were the exhaust manifold nuts once if torched them off!!!

So it was in, at last!!! Took a total of about 30hrs all in all, miles off what it can be done in but I was happy enough given I have no luxuries like a workshop! Also took the chance to fit silicone hoses while I was there as you can see. As well as a few forced things like replacing the fuel tank cradle with one that was a little more intact!

The Eagle eyed out there may spot the difference here, the side by side pic I got before I realised the one I had was from a 2.7 RRS not a D3 and if you cant see it trust me they are not the same! Still found the right one and took some time to shot blast it back to bare metal and treat it to some rust protection paint.

Finally on the road and MOT’d it was on to the nice to haves, so got a Service done oil and filters didn’t get pics of it all....

Then updated BT module from forum member wiggs was fitted (file pic)

And then after some highly appreciated help from forum member nigethecat with getting some measurements for the guard fixings I fabricated myself some painted them up and got the guard fitted much to the delight of a certain someone Very Happy

And you may note the D4 pre face lift LED upgrade in last pic

So to end really just a massive shout out to the guys mentioned and the forum in general. It’s given me the help and guidance needed to get through the teething problems of D3 owenership, now on the the next, which includes prolonging the life of my TC as that’s now fluctuating at 2000rpm along with stripping passnager door lock out which only unlocks 1 out of 10 times......

*edited as I some how forgot the service id done and the LED rear’s

Well done and welcome to the wonderful life as a Discovery owner.

Whilst they can be testing at times, I still have a smile every time i get in it and go anywhere.
Look on the bright side, you have the satisfaction of knowing you have already taken care of those particular problems.

My helper usually sits and casts his eyes over what is going on also, before running off with my tools.

Hi Mark

Well done mate, it is all part of the pleasure of owning a Discovery 3.
I have a helper who also runs off with things when your heads turned the other way.

Thumbs Up
 Regards
Ray

Thank you. Glad others have the same “help” as I do, that said He was only interested on laying on the mats as they were warmer than the concrete!

Cambelt and Oil pump are on the list as well, paper work says it was done at 92k (now on 135k) but want the peace of mind that both items are good!

Need to check if the oil pump is the uprated tensioner sooner rather than later atleast....
