When is my first MOT due?

I understand you can take a pre-mot'd car for its next MOT up to one mont before the MOT is due whilst still preserving the anniversary of the expiry date.

But I cannot seem to find a definitive answer as to when you can take a 'new' car (coming up 3 years old) for its FIRST ever MOT and still maintain its anniversary date of first registration.

There are conflicting opinions and the Gov't site doesn't help (from what I have read).

So my car was registered 21st July - can I take it in on the 22nd June for example and the certificate would be valid until 21st July the following year.....

I think I've confused myself again.....! Rolling Eyes thanks...!

Yes, that's my understanding. I'm sure there was a thread on here about it not that long ago. It just makes logical sense to give some leeway and for consistency with later years.

Yes I know I could - but I thought I would pass it by the knowledgeable collective first to show me in 'black and white' what the law is .... strangely enough I do not trust whoever answers the phone - be it LR or otherwise to really know the answer and point me in the direction of what the 'real' answer is.... Thumbs Up

I've spent time - a lot - doing searches, but still cannot find the answer - and if I can't - I can't trust anyone else to 'second guess'...... or maybe its me being a bit dense?

Up to 30 days before will get an MOT dated to expire 12 months from the third anniversary of first registration.
Did it with the wife's car last year so I had time to get anything major fixed before the warranty expired

Did the same on mine, so that the warranty covered anything major. Mot valid from 12 month from due date.

The rules have changed on this now........there was an article in Autoexpress about it and the number of drivers that are falling foul of the new rules.

Basically if the car passes, as before, the last years anniversary date is preserved if MOT'd within four weeks of the due date (ie you get 13 months) - however if it fails, your car is not road legal at that point despite the fact under the old rules you would have some time left to sort the issues !

It is a stupid change and comes from the fact that in the past you still had a valid certificate (ie piece of paper) stating you had a MOT........now of course you don't and it is recorded on the MOT database that your car has failed and is not road worthy with immediate effect.

Hope this helps !

It has been like that for at least 3 years now as I know someone who was quite shocked when his vehicle failed an early test and was told he now had no MOT
