My first Chrismas Tree Light Event!

Well, there was me heading up to Shap Summit minding my own business when car decided to throw its toys out the pram, big time! Was doing 75mph up the long southbound hill in cruise luckily in lane 1 with nothing around me when there was a thump from the front and the engine died completely. I lost power totally, lost power steering, suspension sank to bump stops, big F message and car telling me limited gears available ("No sh•t Sherlock, what good are gears if the engine isn't turning!!" was the thought that went through my mind), the whole lower row of dash lights were lit up, all of this while I was coaxing it onto the hard shoulder wondering where my hat, gloves & high viz were coz I knew I was going to need them. Tries to start it again, no joy so got out & walked orange phone box. Weather was -2c, ok fir the car and checked that the fuel I'd put in 30 miles was diesel, which it was.

After an hour breakdown guy turned up (luckily that short as could have been there for lot longer), checked oil, water etc (all fine) and suggested starting it. Guess what, the piggin thing started and ran fine for the rest of the 300 miles I had to do that day. I've heard of these D3 hissyfits but it's the first time for me. Anyone any suggestions for cause, no change of rear bulbs & all OK, stop and lights. I thought I'd snapped a drive belt or blown the engine up but to hear it just start up as if to say "What's the problem?" was a major relief. Good job too as I'd spent an hour waiting for the RAC planning it's replacement and it wouldn't have been made in Soluhull!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Thoughts peeps on what could have caused this or is it just ghosts in the machines, to quote I Robot?

Mechanic didn't check for fault codes, was just a local garage RAC contractor.

DSL, you are long enough around that you should know that you should shut it down and wait 15 minutes and then try again and most off the times the D3 will start as nothing ever happened.

I wish it was that way with me Big Cry It is -22 here in the morning. and I have to go to the dealer on tuesday.

No comment on the coat I am wearing please.
It's cold enough that you will wear anything that could keep you warm.

The cold weather is a great leveller as far as fashion goes, sensible is the name of the game. Look at the totty in Newcastle, if they wear so little clothing in winter, what do they wear in the summer???? Corrrrrrrrr!, nudge - nudge, wink - wink, say no more squire!!!!!! Whistle Thumbs Up

Roel, know that now and should have tried it but when you've persuaded yourself that the engine has reduced itself to a "parts needed" list you don't want to do any further damage by turning the key. Sad I Know now. Besides kept mind busy by going round the mental showrooms. I hate to say that a Toyota LC was well on the list as its replacement as that's what the HATO dudes had when they pulled up to check I was OK. They looked so happy & warm in there! Derek,

SWMBO called me this morning from the side of the autoroute near Metz - car had dropped to its bumpstops and was refusing to lift. I told her to exit the autoroute before some muppet ran into them, wait a few minutes and then restart. Normal operation resumed, although she said that the car showed an amber suspension warning later, which cleared before I got home. I guess it's too much cold water and salt on 4-year old sensors.

Don't buy a LC ... Shocked

local HATO fight to get the D3/D4's rather than the LC. When speaking to them recently they all sware by the Disco's but hate the LC as they spend more time on the tow trucks and in the workshops than the Discos, they also said engines and gearboes wear out far quicker on the LC, stick with what you know and what would you do with all those wheels Thumbs Up

It was the heat from inside the car that appealed, looked so toastie and warm and such a nice place to enjoy a cup of coffee and a doughnut!! The other thought that crossed my mind was the Audi A4 Allroad, esp the 3.0 version. But SWMBO's car made it home so it is safe, for the mo. Twisted Evil

As well as the Disco I've also got an Audi S4. It's been, errr, interesting to say the least in the snow... Makes you feel like a Finnish rally driver, all-wheel wheel-spins in any gear. Scary. So you might be better with less power rather than more.

I could maybe start a thread on winter tyres for Audi quattros... Whistle
