graduated cylinder
refill bottle. I don't know how to call it but look at the pic; i paid 2 euros or so for it.

See the sticker on the bottle for oil specs
first of all I lifted the car and put the stands under the frame. For the front I used two big wooden blocks 'cause I didn't want to spend the money for another pair of stands (almost 60 euros). Of course it's mandatory and safe to support the car as already said onsite and stated by the users manual

first i decided to replace rear diff oil, and so i loosed the fill plug with a common 8mm allen key and drained the old oil loosing the sump plug with my new “special square keyâ€

all I got was the old nasty oil and a dirt sump plug i cleaned with a cloth and compressed air

then i proceeded with the oil refill spueezing my refill bottle. It took 5 minutes to empty the bottle and it was a bit difficult too.

I saw a beautiful graduated syringe from my push... oops supplier, but i costed me 40 euros so i decided the 2 euros bottle was enough for my job
finished, closed the fill plug, and proceeded with the front.
The front fill plug is a bit hidden and difficult but not impossible to find as already said

nice one Filo, it's re-assuring that your rear sump plug looked pretty much the same as mine did a few weeks ago Bodsys Brake Bible

Fantastic write-up - thank you
Good idea to include the tip about making sure you can loosen the fill plug before removing the drain plug 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

To save buying that nice wrench, a 3/8 drive standard rachet or tee bar etc fits perfectly in the drain plug. Also, the levels, believe it or not, are not topped up until they overflow! 0.6ltrs in the front 1.1 ltrs in the rear (for non locking diff). this is about 5mm below the filler plug. The oil grade is Castrol SAF-XO LR part no:TYK500010
(locking diff is different)

good write up, how much miles have your D3 done? Any sign of sweating oil at the seals? My D3, late 2008 done 23k myles, with sweating on both diffs is this normal, should oil levels be checked, is worth a waranty claim for new seals, or normal for LR and due to lack of breathing on diffs?

I bought it in may with 69k on the clock, actually with 75K.
No sweating at all; I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
As for the diffs, there's no need to check the oil level and the new fill is done by quantity, as already said by SteveNorman.
This is the reason why I used the graduated cylinder.

I can't get over how much ferrous metal particles are on those magnetic drain plugs! I've used magnetic plugs for some years now and have never once had any sort of buildup like that. Do you do a lot of spirited driving or is this normal? Thanks!
