I believe that we are in for a harsh winter this year. I’ve always been disappointed with the limited performance of the FBH. It is working fine and as LR intended but 20mins run time is not enough (think it used to be 30 mins pre2012). The windscreen just about clears but the car still needs frost scraping. The cab is not cold but not warm either.
The 20mins limit is locked into the car and cannot be changed so I intend to fit a helping hand - one of these fitted to the inlet or outlet pump hose of the fuel burning heater.

My question is this please.
Because the coolant temperature will be pre warmed a fair bit already at start up, the FBH will very quickly reach its target temperature. My worry is that if the coolant reaches its target temp will the FBH then shut done early – defeating my efforts. Or will it continue to run until some other perameter is reached e.g. cab interior temp. Or does it continue for 20mins regardless.
I intend to detail my efforts in a thread if the FBH works better (or if its a fail )

I don't know if you have a D3 or D4, I have a my14 D4 with factory fitted remote and I can only say it is very good, 20 minutes with the pre heater on and when the drivers door is opened the heat hits you, no exaggeration 10 times betterthan my old D3. Apparently there was a piping mod done which put more heat into the cockpit than the engine, I would be looking into that before doing any other mod.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
2011 D4 XS - OBD port protection, RLD spare wheel protector, All LED interiors lights, Timed Climate enabled, iiD tool paired.
2011 D4 Landmark - Stolen from same dealer before I paid for it
2011 D4 GS - Stolen whilst at dealer ... All LED interiors lights, DRLs, Spare Wheel protector.
1996 300Tdi - Eaten by tin worms

Hi,
if its designed to fit in the heating circuit why not fit it so
the FBH would then work as it should independantly of that unit, so if you did not turn it on and the engine needed "Help" it would work
In cold weather the FBH can start during a journey if needed, such as a quick stop at a shop, you come back out fire up and so does the FBH.

Pre heating time can be easily adjusted with an altox…
But beware, you battery needs to be topped up to the max in between BHF use, LR had a reason to limit the time on 20 mins…
Regarding the electrical pre-heater…
Imho, working with a external 230V plug, s s, forget it once, when driving off in a hurry and the damage will be severelyBest regards

All that cheap electrical stuff is copied from more decent electrical stuff, still designed for (at first mostly) scandinavian use, where current was cheap, and where users did plug in their units as soon as they parked somewere…. For hours….. maybe the whole night….. to keep things defrosted so they were always ready for use….
But keep in mind…..Volume, both water/coolant and metal needs time to warm up…. 2,7T needs more heat than 1T
You can not heat up 2,7T fully in 20 or 30 mins…..
So a work around is a shortcut in the coolant system to get only the heater matrix (prim) fed and there you have interior warmth, in the later D4….
You can add such a valve in a D3 quite easily…some times.switched electronically (depending on heater software) or permanent…Best regards
