Sorry M3DPO but that's a ridiculous thing to say! Mate, if you don't know don't guess at it! That frankly bit of advice could kill someone! Ask yourself a question, would you be as confident if it was your son or daughter going into that situation? .... Didn't think so
It's noticeable under my carport let alone an enclosed space. As has been said elsewhere, exhaust fumes kill and kill quickly. DON'T take the chance!
I've been doing it for the last 3 winters and I'm still here to tell the tale, but with a D3 not a D4, I don't know if the heater fans start up on the D4 but if they do I would imagine the circulation flap is closed to prevent fumes being sucked into the car. And of course my FBH is well maintained It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I'm calling on that - You don't honestly expect anyone here to believe that do you? And if it was true personally, I wouldn't be drawing attention to the fact that I practiced such an idiotic action.My17 Volvo XC90 Inscription

i am glad this thread was started as i would have been ignorant of the risks
i have had my D4 for a month now and I use the timed climate every morning here is Switzerland. the only reason i keep it outside is because of all the junk in the garage. Otherwise i would have kept it in the garage overnight and been ignorant of the threat from the pre-heat.
thanks for bringing this up

Ok Martin, point taken but I maintain that the "advice" is just outright dangerous and needs to be highlighted as such. Had a cousin who died in a closed garage from engine fumes - A sensitive subject certainly. I wouldn't wish anyone else to die of ignorance in this kind of situation. Apologies for the tone but not for the message, so to speak.

@Emmab No problem. It has been on my mind for some time.
I actually asked my LR dealer the very same question, with the salesman saying he would have to take advice from the workshop and never got back to me!!!! Whilst I appreciate that CM fume exposure seems obvious, what about the punter who buys a D4 and has no idea it has a FBH. One might start the car in garage with the door open for the exhaust fumes to exit via the open door, but not appreciate that their are fumes coming from the front of the car etc. With ignorance one might think the function is actually electrically fuelled and poses no risk etc etc.
Anyway glad the topic has been raised, and I do appreciate the passion Steve and how close to home it might be.2017 Disco5 First Edition(On Order)

Tbh I wouldn't we that bothered about the CO content, I would be more worried about the ratio of oxygen to CO, if you are in a small space the oxygen level can drop quickly.

Thank you Martin
A garage large enough to take a D3 would need to be approximately 3 x 3 x 6m = 54m3, searching on the bay of E the first fan I found was this- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BATHROOM-EXTRACT...27b6d3217e Output = 93 m3 per hour, the second one I found - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BATHROOM-EXTRACT...27b6d3217e Output= 295m3 per hour.
This verifies what I sujested IMOP that a conventional bathroom fan placed in the right location will extract the fumes created by the FBH to a safe level, the first fan will change the air in the the garage in approx 35 mins the second in 11 mins this is not taking into account the amount of air/fumes expelled when the doors are opened.
I must confess my garage is a little above average and the Disco is put to bed every night, only exception is when it's on holiday duties. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I run mine in the garage every morning and by the time the door is fully up the smell has pretty much gone.

You cannot smell carbon monoxide.
If you have a CO meter in the house just take it into the garage with the FBH running - the numbers will alarm you and the meter.
For anyone reading this thread be under no illusion of the danger you are in.

Don't mess about where CO is concerned!! I would rather be cold and safe!
It's amazing how many people die each year from doing stuff like this, CO kills!
Don't put yourself at risk. If it was meant to be run inside it would have a flue and adequate ventilation!
Remember children and the elderly are most at risk from CO poisoning.
Heating your garage electrically or adding a radiator and insulating would remove the need for the FBH in the morning.
