Faulty gearbox
Evening gents ,got a problem with my gearbox. The car is an 06 hse.The problem started about 2 months ago ,while out driving i drove one of the local hillclimbs (Hartside) quite smartly, got a bing bong and a warning message of "Transmission overheat ,please drive slower".i did slow down and drove more slowly and did not have any more problems.A fortnight later after driving for about an hour and a half heading home from Yorkshire the scenic way over the moor tops got the same thing .Same again this time, i slowed down from an average of 50 to 65 mph but after 2 mins all hell let loose. The message centre display showed several warnings and the dash lit up like an xmass tree.i pulled over and stopped and switched off the engine ,waited till the car had gone to sleep and then re- started the engine. the message centre read something like "transmission fault , restricted gears only" and was left with an orange brake symbol on dash.I tried switching off and on several times but these faults would not clear.Took an hour to limp the car home in this state with the gear diplay showing a large Capital "H".I could not select manually any other gear, and at one point i had to stop for traffic on a hill and it seemed to lock in "Park", this i cleared by switching off and on again. Took the car into local dealership and after them having it six days they said they had replaced the control unit and valve block inside the gerabox. This was done under warranty.Drove the car a cople of miles home from local stealer yesterday all seemed well BUT ,today while driving to Keswick and back , aprox an hour and a quater into the journey (on the way back to home at an average of 50 to 65 mph on A roads) the same thing again.Limped it right back to local dealer and left it there .Only sales people there so will contact the service/workshop on monday, but now have little faith in there ability as you can imagine.Any ideas ?M Caddy
The gearbox oil is cooled by passing it through a separate vertical section of the radiator - on the nearside or right as you look at the car from the front. This is the "Cold side of the radiator. If the car has been through some mud, the fins block up with mud and it is possible that the ATF is not being cooled enough.
Mind you, I would also expect the engine to get hot as well - does it?Mark.

intercooler or intercooler hose but then until its plugged in could also be the brake switch as that also throws up a transmission error and drops the vehicle etc
make sure the dealer plugs it in to the IDS in the workshop, if you can remember what time approx/day it happened and if poss approx mileage then should come up with the right faultcode which would have lead to a series of non related faults as the car tries to get yer to understand there's a problem that you're ignoring so it starts to shut down
Did you brake just before the first and second time it all kicked off?

Thanks for the quick replies guys, to answer your questions ,1 no serious muddy off roading ,just the kielder day and have checked the rad ,thats clean.2 not breaking at the time accelerating onto motorway ,dont think its the brake light bulbs as they are ok in front of car and are LED's at the back.Intercooler hose was replaced for a Bell Auto nice shiny blue one. Did you check the brake light switch located above the brake pedal?Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Brake light switch will cause a lot but leaves the gearbox as it should, if memory serves well.
It can be part of the problem but not the whole thing.
Any juddering whilst accellerating?
Could come down to a faulty sensor...

Just a quick update ,found out today that the "Landrover warranty man" has told my local landrover dealer to send the gearbox to a "specialist" repairer. Was told i should have the car back early next week.Am thinking it must be going to somebody that deals with ZF gearbox repairs ,will let you know the outcome when i get it back.M Caddy

Auto gearbox
Final update ( I hope ) , the local dealer ended up having my 06 hse for a week. When i was told it was ready i was informed a transmission specialist had advised fitting a new gearbox ecu and valve control block (@ a cost of £1500 for parts).Took the disco away and gave it a test run, saddly after less than an hour at speeds up to 65mph it again went into "limp home mode" (trans overheat then restricted gears avaiable ,etc , etc). I limped it straight back to dealers ,told them what had happened ,told them how annoyed i was (never swore once).they said they could not do much on a saturday,as there was no workshop people in.Got in touch with them the following monday and they supplied a curtessy car and said expert would look again.3 and a half weeks later got my disco back. They informed me they had fitted new gearbox with the new ecu and contol block also and, here is the "Killer" a new radiator.I asked why the new rad ? and was told they had been advised by said transmission specialist. They had also fitted a new egr valve and adjusted the epb.All this for a very reasonable £4500 .Thank phook i extended the factory warranty 6 weeks earlier .The real scary thing is tho' is the radiator problem, was this another case of the wall between rad and auto box fluid breaking down/corroding and letting water/coolant into the transmission fluid.I have been under the disco and can quiet easily see new gearbox, radiator and a hole load off new piping.I must say at all times my dealer kept me informed and tryed to minimise the inconvenence to me. Be scared , be very scared how many more are out there about to pop .M Caddy
