Auto gear selection problems.

A few days ago I noticed that I couldn't get command shift to work but it seemed ok when I restarted the car. Today SWMBO got stuck in a car park only able to select PRN no D no command shift. She rang me for advice and didn't seem too pleased when I suggested she reverse the six miles home with our six month old screaming in the back! While I was looking for LR assist's number she clarted on for a while and managed to get into Drive. I tried it out when she got home and sure enough you can only get into Drive if you whack the selector fully back and even then a slight nudge will knock it out of gear. Is this something I can easily fix (like a loose easily accessible switch) or would LR assist come out as I don't really want to drive it to the dealers in case it jumps out of gear on the A1 and I can't get it back in gear. Its a known problem, and getting quite common with all the road salt around. There is a topic all about it > http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic31656.html

Thanks for the quick reply Gareth. Interesting to see that thread was started almost exactly a year ago so the weather (or salt) must be a factor)! Do you happen to know if LR assist would come out to the car on my drive?

All fixed. Rang LR assist from my office at 8:15. 9:15 man came out to the car on my drive at home, got under the car cleaned and lubed a plastic bush (according to SWMBO who was supervising) and it was all better by 10:00. Can't ask for better than that. Very Happy Very Happy Rimini Red

Kerb climber, I dont have trouble selecting drive but have started to lose drive when trying to pull out at junctions. D you think that it could be the same cause?

Cheers

If you mean it goes into Neutral and your engine races then it could be because when I could engage Drive on mine the slightest touch would knock it into Neutral. If yours stays in Drive then apart from the car moving off in too high a gear ?? (don't know if that's likely) then my limited knowledge suggests an engine related problem. Someone who really knows should be along shortly with the answer you need. Very Happy Rimini Red

Thanks for quick fix tip. i had the same problem when braking or stopping at junction every so often when pulling away the car would rev highly as if in neutral ,moving the gearshift away from drive and back in would drive ok . i replaced the lever ,bush and a spring washer that goes between the lever and the bush, very easy job.I marked the position of the original lever on the rod with nail varnish and also measured it from end of rod as backup. gearshift now glides into positions freely without dropping out of gear, and you can feel the difference.part numbers for all the parts are
LLRO12704 LEVER £2.75+VAT
LTZT500040 BUSH £3.19+VAT
LTYF000060 WASHER £2.57+VAT
plus fella at landrover said give bush fitting a good coating in never sieze compound for its water repellant properties

After the car being unused for 2 months (I had Pneumonia) I am now suffering the same D selection problem. For a while driving in sport mode seemed to do the trick but now I can only select drive by holding onto the selector lever while driving.

My question on this....

Some drivers have suggested just lubing the clamp/pivot with WD40 is a good quick fix. Is it worth trying this as a first step or should I just order the bits and be done with it ? (I don't fancy having to get under the car twice)

Also is WD40 the best for this or could someone suggest something else ?

Hi Martin

The pivot lever bush is really an easy job to change, i would recommend just replacing all parts as listed in my previous post as they do seize quite solid ,it is quite clean under the car once you remove the plastic undertray (4 bolts ) .I simply drove the front wheels up onto a couple of concrete building blocks and that gave plenty of clearance.go for it !

Thanks - I'll see if I can get my local independent LR specialist to do this for me this week, otherwise I get the bits and do it my self next weekend.

I had Rovertune do this for me while I waited today - took about 30/40 mins. Great service and saved me from crawling around in the freezing cold.

Quite an amazing difference to the movement of the selector, now it moves like a knife through butter. I had not realised how stiff it had become.

now, bring on the snow.... Thumbs Up

I know this is an old post, but I had this problem in December '10, my friendly LR stealer 'fixed it' for nearly £90, The car isn't used much, it just started happening again (August '11) after less than 3k miles, so I'll have a look-see myself.. After all, a £90 job can't be very complex..... (wry humour). I believe there's an article & photos in the tech section.. Linkage gets a bit crappy.. With mine, put it in D and occasionally nothing happens, put it in 'Command Shift' and it goes. Use the car a bit and play with the gear selector (when stationary..) and it improves..
Some time later: This is a dead easy job to do if you have any small degree of DIY motor skills. I discovered that the stealer had just squirted some WD40 at it, the part was the original. Robbing b------s.

In the end I had to replace the connecting linkage between the gearshift 'cable' (actually a rod) and the gearbox shift shaft (!). Follow the pictorial guide in the Tech section, it really is very easy, a 10mm socket to take the underbody gearbox guard plate off, then a 13mm socket to remove the nuts (DO follow the guide!!). Cost of the bits was just over £13.. Takes 20 minutes. There's another post which has the link to the tech guide.
