Do fault codes remain in the memory until cleared by a fault code reader or do they get cleared each time the car is started? I have fault codes but don't know whether they are old codes. Java Black Metropolis MY06

Fault codes remain until they are cleared. The codes should be recorded with the time they occurred and at what mileage. I assume the FCR you have does not give you that information. Depending on what codes you are getting up it might be worth getting someone (an independent specialist for example) to read and clear them.
