How far can key fob be when starting?

Tried to start the Disco this morning and nothing. Just air con starting

No error messages on dash

Then thought it maybe the keys which were in my jacket pocket on back seat

Moved them to the front and it started

I would have thought if the key was out of range it would tell me ???

My worry is that it was coincidence and there maybe an intermittent fault starting? [/i]

Strange, because (and I tried several times) it's necessary that the smart key MUST be inside the car "perimetry"..

may be you don't push the brake enough?....

If the smart key is out of range you normally get "Smart Key Not Found" displayed. Range is quite close, with the key in my pocket, leaning in with one hand pressing the brake, the other hand pressing "Start" is not normally near enough will get the Smart Key Not Found.

The car as 6 aerials, items n° 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11 and their physical position and mounting direction are such as to perceive (with very low position error) if the key is inside the perimeter of the vehicle or not:

from the Italian Workshop manual (so sorry for the speedy translation):

Passive starter
At the request of the CJB, the Keyless Access Module (KVM) induces each of the low-frequency internal antennas (LF) to emit a signal. When the Smart Key is in the cockpit, it detects the LF signals and responds by sending a data identification signal radio frequency (RF) to the keyless entry module (KVM) with the RF receiver.

If the received data correspond to those stored, the Keyless Access Module (KVM) continues the passive starting process by communicating a signal of "Smart Key valid" to CJB via the CAN bus at medium speed.

When the CJB receives permission and confirms the response with an internal calculation, it transmits the encoded data to the ECM on the CAN bus at high speed. After the confirmation by the ECM, the ignition is enabled.

Before sending a signal to the CJB mobilisation, the ECM exchanges data encrypted with the mechanism of the electric steering lock to allow the unlocking of the steering column. Only the instrument panel provides the ground for the locking steering column motor.

The CJB enables the relay of the feed pump, which on diesel vehicles actuates the supply pump while on gasoline vehicles send the battery voltage to the supply pump driving module for driving the feed pump set to ECM.
